PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Brandon Connor (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joker Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Brandon Connor!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joker Smith!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Gregory Folan and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith has closed the distance and engaged Connor in a clinch.
Smith leaning against his opponent.
Connor wants a takedown.
Smith pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Smith prevents a takedown attempt there.
Smith tries to break free but Connor pushes him back against the cage.
Smith throws an elbow but it's blocked.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Smith takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Connor is trying to drag Smith to the mat but Smith just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brandon Connor. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Connor.
Connor wants to take the fight to the mat but Smith manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Connor can't get the takedown.
Smith changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Connor fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Connor shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Connor was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Connor get's back to his feet.
Smith keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Connor gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Smith counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Smith.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Connor working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Connor is breathing heavily.

Smith is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Joker Smith was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Connor fails with the takedown

and Smith counters with a nice double leg into side control. Connor won't be happy with that.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Connor is looking for a kimura here.

Connor thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Connor wants to control but Smith is keeping him busy.
Smith is looking to improve his position.

Connor looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Smith has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Connor is working away from the top position though.

Connor is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Smith keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Connor wants to take a breather but Smith is having none of it.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Smith moves into range and clinches up with Connor.
Smith tries to land knees in the clinch but Connor avoids the damage to the body.
Smith tries a knee to the head but Connor blocks it.
Connor changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Smith fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Smith moves into the clinch successfully.
Smith tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Connor smiles and moves away.

Smith clinches with his opponent.

Connor misses with a takedown
and Smith counters with a nice low kick that buckles Connor's knee momentarily.

Smith closes the distance and pushes Connor back into the cage.
With the fighters up against the cage, Smith throws an elbow but misses.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Connor is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brandon Connor. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Connor jumps guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Brandon Connor will probably get the nod.
That's time! Connor's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Smith tries for a takedown but Connor sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

and Smith counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Smith.

The crowd are getting on Smith's back here. They're not happy about his lack of aggression in the clinch.

Smith tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Connor avoids it.

Connor misses with a takedown

and Smith holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Connor tries to pull guard but Smith holds him up against the cage and eventually Connor drops back down to his feet.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Smith has hold of one of Connor's legs. Connor is fighting the takedown attempt but Smith gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Connor is trying to control the position but Smith postures up.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Joker Smith wasn't active enough on the ground.
Connor changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Smith tries to avoid it but Connor manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Smith to the ground. Smith escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Smith clinches up with Connor and pushes him back against the cage.
Connor avoiding damage as Smith throws knees to the body.

Smith is pushing Connor up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Smith drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Smith tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Connor avoids it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Smith has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Connor is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Connor pulls guard.
Smith controls from within his opponent's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Connor is trying to keep Smith in close.

And that's the end of the fight!
Joker Smith comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Smith has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
