PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Pekka Pikkarainen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Rudd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pikkarainen comes to the cage accompanied by Apocalyptica - Path. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pekka Pikkarainen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jason Rudd!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Ben Zyskovitsi and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pikkarainen shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rudd but Rudd pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Pikkarainen scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

and Pikkarainen counters with a shoot takedown. Rudd fights it but they end up in guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jason Rudd hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Pikkarainen fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Rudd sprawls well initially but Pikkarainen persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Pikkarainen looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Rudd rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Rudd has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pikkarainen is working away from the top position though.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Rudd is trying to stand back up but Pikkarainen is controlling him

Rudd is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Let's hope that Rudd has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Pikkarainen has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Rudd is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Pikkarainen.

Rudd is looking to take a break and control but Pikkarainen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Pikkarainen tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Rudd lands a nice forearm strike.
Rudd works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
A lull in the action here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pikkarainen is not content to let Rudd control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Pekka Pikkarainen will probably get the nod.

You can see the frustration on Rudd's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Rudd can do anything to dispel that myth.

Pikkarainen is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Rudd looks calm but he's in trouble here. Pikkarainen gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Rudd is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Pikkarainen lets go of the hold and Rudd can pop his arm back in it's socket.
