PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Cory McDanver (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and George Suzuki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). George Suzuki struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 147.1lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Cory McDanver!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, George Suzuki!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Suzuki swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Suzuki throws a right and a left that McDanver avoids nicely.
McDanver shoots in for a double leg but Suzuki sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Suzuki throws a combination but it was largely blocked by McDanver.

McDanver scores a takedown into full mount!
McDanver fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
Suzuki blocking the ground and pound.
McDanver cracks Suzuki with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

McDanver sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

McDanver misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
McDanver is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Suzuki can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Suzuki is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Suzuki is in all sorts of trouble here.

McDanver is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Suzuki has managed to escape the submission attempt.

McDanver is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Suzuki can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
McDanver unloads with some shots from mount but Suzuki bucks and avoids them well.
Suzuki is controlling an arm, preventing McDanver from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.

Suzuki pushes McDanver away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, McDanver gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

McDanver tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

McDanver goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Suzuki rolls with the submission and now he's on top in McDanver's guard! Nice work there by Suzuki!

McDanver had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Suzuki defends it easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Suzuki not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
McDanver wants to sweep but no luck.

McDanver looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Suzuki trying to control the position from guard on top but McDanver is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

McDanver is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Suzuki defends well.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Suzuki wants to control from the top but McDanver keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cory McDanver dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


No luck for McDanver with that takedown attempt.

Suzuki lands a left and a right that send McDanver crashing to the mat, dazed. Suzuki thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


McDanver is rocked!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Suzuki swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Oh McDanver is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
McDanver avoids a punch combination nicely.

McDanver moves into range and clinches up with Suzuki.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

McDanver looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Suzuki puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard.

McDanver is looking for a sweep. Suzuki is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Cory McDanver overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
McDanver has a hand on Suzuki's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Suzuki takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Suzuki lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
McDanver is bucking up trying to escape but Suzuki cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Suzuki jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but McDanver manages to avoid the submission attempt.
McDanver tries to bench press Suzuki off him but Suzuki keeps the position.
Suzuki wants to control but McDanver is keeping him busy.

Suzuki is trying to get an arm triangle but McDanver is defending well.

McDanver gets back to half guard.
McDanver seems to have got his legs back now.

Suzuki wants to control but McDanver is keeping him busy.

McDanver tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Suzuki has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
McDanver is arching his back trying to strike from the bottom but Suzuki turns him over and now has his back.
McDanver rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Suzuki stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McDanver swivels though and keeps the full guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now McDanver is on top in guard.
McDanver trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
McDanver content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
This has been an exciting period of action!

McDanver drops back looking for a leg! Suzuki is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Suzuki manages to kick McDanver off! McDanver jumps back into Suzuki's guard.
Suzuki not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
McDanver throws a big right hand that misses.

McDanver drops back, looking for a kneebar! Suzuki looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Suzuki looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Suzuki!

Suzuki is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but McDanver has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Suzuki is looking to defend but McDanver has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Suzuki! McDanver pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Suzuki taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Cory McDanver!
