PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jack Ripper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Mills (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jack Ripper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rick Mills!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Dillan Fox and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ripper shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Mills manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Ripper stopping the sweep attempt from Mills.
Ripper looking to pass the guard.
Ripper is looking to advance position but Mills has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Mills landing shots from mount.
Mills throwing strikes here but Ripper is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Ripper tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Ripper is trying to get back to his feet but can't.
Mills thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Ripper can't escape the position.

Mills has control of Ripper's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Ripper regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mills trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Ripper wants to hold on but Mills pushes him away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ripper looks out of his depth in this position - he's holding on tight.
Mills has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Mills lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Mills moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Ripper has worked his arm free - good work by Ripper!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Mills wants to control but Ripper is keeping him busy.
The referee asks Mills politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Mills prefers to stall for the moment though.

Ripper wants to get back to his feet but Mills drags him back down.
Ripper is looking to reverse the position.
Ripper on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ripper tries to get out of the position.

Mills thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
You can see the frustration on Ripper's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Mills working the head and body with strikes.
Sloppy strikes there by Mills.
Mills remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Mills trying to control the position but Ripper is working away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mills is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rick Mills dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Ripper tries to bum rush Mills with a series of wild strikes but Mills uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Ripper closes the distance and clinches.

Ripper jumps guard.
Ripper keeping moving, preventing Mills from controlling successfully.
Mills is looking to work some ground and pound but Ripper has wrist control.
Mills postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Ripper is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Mills is controlling him.
Ripper knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mills on the ground.
Mills trying to control the position from guard on top but Ripper is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Rick Mills was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Ripper moves into the clinch.
Mills drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Mills tries to pull guard but Ripper won't allow it.
Ripper prevents Mills from breaking the clinch.
Ripper drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Ripper escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Jab, jab by Ripper - just one landing.
Mills lands a nice looking body kick.
Mills swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Jack Ripper seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Ripper scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Mills wants to control but Ripper postures up.
Mills is breathing heavily.
Mills is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Ripper is looking to advance position but Mills won't allow it.
Ripper stalling away here and it's allowed Mills to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Ripper wants to get up but he can't break Mills's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Ripper has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Ripper trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Mills trying to keep a closed guard but Ripper is proving a slippery customer.
Mills manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Mills avoids the attempt from Ripper to control.

Ripper is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
Mills throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Ripper tries to hold on but Mills pushes him away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Mills takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Mills looking to control but Ripper is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jack Ripper will probably get the nod.
That's time! Ripper's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Ripper lands with a shot to the body.
Mills dives in and grabs Ripper's left leg, looking for a takedown. Ripper pushes down on Mills's head and hops out.
Ripper avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Mills closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Ripper's guard.
Ripper is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Mills looking to sit in guard and control but Ripper gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Ripper throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Mills has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Ripper off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Mills takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A nice inside leg kick there by Mills. That's going to slow Ripper down.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Ripper keeps control of Mills as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Mills is trying to pull guard but Ripper turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Ripper breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Ripper scores with a jab to the jaw.
Mills on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Mills shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Ripper misses with a double jab
and Mills counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Mills tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ripper sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Mills somewhat.
Jack Ripper has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Mills.
Ripper misses with a few strikes there.
Ripper misses with a low kick.
Mills tries to land a front kick but Ripper steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Ripper leaves Mills with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Ripper has taken the fight to the clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ripper pulls guard effortlessly.

Ripper is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Mills defends well.
Mills won't allow Ripper to sweep him here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mills thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Ripper not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ripper wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Jack Ripper just wasn't active enough.

Ripper darts in and clinches Mills up against the cage.
Mills looking to stall.
Mills jumps guard but Ripper turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
A bit of stalling here from Ripper.
Mills is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Ripper is keeping busy.
Mills is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Ripper to keep the fight standing.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Ripper breaks from the clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jack Ripper showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Ripper has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
