PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shane Johns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Drake Vonstein (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johns comes into the arena with By the Sword - Slash blaring out of the sound system. Vonstein has chosen Seether - Remedy as his entrance music. The key to victory for Shane Johns has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Shane Johns!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 16 - 15 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Drake Vonstein!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Trevor Gratis and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johns pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Vonstein uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Johns.

Vonstein closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Johns quickly recovers to half guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Vonstein looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Johns with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Vonstein throwing shots but Johns is blocking nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johns is not content to let Vonstein control the position.
Vonstein missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Vonstein is pressing down on Johns's thigh, looking to free his foot. Johns is holding on for now.
Johns is trying to control but can't.
Johns is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Johns is trying to maintain the position but Vonstein is very close to passing his half guard.
Johns gets back to full guard.
Johns manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Vonstein manages to get himself to full guard.
Johns trying to control the position from guard on top but Vonstein is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Vonstein wants to sweep here but Johns controlling him for the moment.

Johns stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vonstein swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vonstein keeping moving, preventing Johns from controlling successfully.

We're going to have a standup here because Shane Johns wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Johns works Vonstein's body with a nice hook.
Johns pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Shane Johns is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Vonstein will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Vonstein uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Johns.
Johns feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Vonsteins jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Vonstein is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Johns.


It looks like Drake Vonstein has been cut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Vonstein takes a swing at Johns's ribcage but misses.

Johns throws a body kick that misses.
Shane Johns seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vonstein walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Johns misses with a wild body shot.
Vonstein keeps the fight on the outside.
Vonstein throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Vonstein throws a front kick aimed at Johns's knee but Johns avoids it well.
Vonstein throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Johns sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Johns closes the distance and clinches.
Johns utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.

Johns escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Vonstein moves in looking to clinch but Johns pushes him off.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lazy left from Johns finds it's target.
Johns just misses with a punch to the body.
A punch combination from Johns misses.
A head kick misses from Johns.
Johns cracks Vonstein with an open hand slap.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Johns checks a leg kick.
Vonstein shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Johns sprawls well. Johns wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Vonstein gets slowly back to his feet.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Johns - that will leave a mark!

Johns has taken the fight to the clinch.
Johns tries to throw a body punch but Vonstein avoids it by throwing Johns back against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Drake Vonstein's cut.
That's time! Back to the action!

Vonstein shoots for a takedown but Johns saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Vonstein dodges the punch combination from Johns.
Vonstein shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Johns as he avoids it easily.
Johns throws a looping overhand right but Vonstein ducks down to avoid it.
Vonstein will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Nice uppercut lands for Johns. That snapped Vonstein's head back.
Johns misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Vonstein looks for a takedown but Johns sprawls well.
Shane Johns has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Drake Vonstein.
Johns lands a high kick!
Vonstein takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Vonstein on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Johns smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Vonstein dodges the punch combination from Johns.
Johns throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Johns tries to bum rush Vonstein with a series of wild strikes but Vonstein uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Shane Johns is winning the standup battle so far.
Johns throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Johns fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Vonstein manages to avoid it.
Johns scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Johns throws a front kick that sends Vonstein stumbling back into the cage.
Johns lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Vonstein shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.

Johns takes a swing at Vonstein's ribcage but misses.
Johns tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Vonstein.
Vonstein wants to control but Johns is keeping him busy.

Vonstein tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Vonstein has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Johns tries to roll over but Vonstein keeps him under control.
Vonstein wants to take a breather but Johns is having none of it.
Vonstein controlling the action here.
Johns is trying to get back to full guard.
Vonstein thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Vonstein not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Drake Vonstein has got the better of the ground game so far.
Johns works his way to full guard. Good work.
Vonstein sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Johns's guard.
Vonstein is trying to control. Johns wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Vonstein not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Johns is staying active underneath Vonstein, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Johns can't do much from the bottom here.

Vonstein is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Johns defends it well.

Drake Vonstein has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Vonstein thows a huge punch but Johns dodges it nicely.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Johns tries to get to full guard but Vonstein has control of the leg.
Vonstein throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Johns to regain full guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Johns holds on and takes a little breather.

Vonstein looking to sit in guard and control but Johns gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Vonstein looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Vonstein has his foot on Johns's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Johns works his way back into a safe position though.
Johnsis looking to pass into half guard but Vonstein pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Vonstein is in guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Vonstein's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Johns can't keep his opponent in guard - Vonstein advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Johns wants to improve his position but Vonstein is controlling well.

Johns has a hand on Vonstein's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Vonstein takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Johns in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.

Drake Vonstein comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Johns has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
