PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brian Puffer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Luis Costa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Luis Costa told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brian Puffer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Luis Costa!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Thiago Cunha and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Puffer. Costa shrugs it off though.
Puffer bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
Costa tries to clinch up but Puffer circles away and keeps his distance.
A head kick misses from Puffer.
Puffer tries to land a front kick but Costa steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Puffer connects with a leg kick. Costa looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Costa tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Puffer manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Puffer throws a solid leg kick but Costa takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Puffer.
Puffer tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Costa chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Puffer can pounce on him.
A slapping leg kick lands for Puffer.
Puffer lands with a nice body kick.
Puffer misses with an attempted mid kick.
Puffer fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Costa checks it well.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Costa looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

The fight stays on the outside here - Costa looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Puffer throws a leg kick but Costa moved away.
Puffer shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Costa moves out of range of the body kick from Puffer.
Costa tries to close the distance and clinch up but Puffer swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Costa wants to clinch up but Puffer keeps it at a distance.
Puffer throws a chopping leg kick but Costa manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Crunch! Puffer slams his shin into Costa's torso.
Puffer feints and then cracks Costa's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Costa down.
Puffer tries a head kick but it misses.
A nice leg kick lands there from Puffer.
Brian Puffer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Costa on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Puffer pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Puffer tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Nice sprawl there from Puffer as Costa shoots in.
Puffer scores with a head kick.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
A chopping leg kick lands by Puffer.

Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Puffer lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Costa has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Costa and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Puffer does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Puffer lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Puffer will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Costa blocks the body kick.
Costa goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Puffer lands a nice leg kick that just misses Costa's sensitive parts.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Puffer fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Costa has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Costa seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Puffer is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Costa jumps guard but Puffer stands there with Costa around his waist. Costa gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Puffer tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Costa avoids it.
Puffer misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Costa.
Puffer crunches a lovely knee into Costa's ribcage.

Puffer breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Costa stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Puffer.
Puffer fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Costa has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Costa's leg has a nasty welt from taking a succession of leg kicks. That must be slowing him down.

Costa wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Puffer, who protects the arm well.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Costa on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Puffer. Puffer obviously looking to wear him down.
Costa shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Puffer as he avoids it easily.
Costa takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Puffer throws a head kick but Costa moves out of range.

Costa doesn't manage to clinch there - Puffer circles away.
Brian Puffer is winning the standup battle so far.

and Costa counters with a nice body kick.
Puffer lands a head kick. Costa smiles back at him and beckons him forward.

Costa is still on wobbly legs! Can Puffer finish him?
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Puffer throws a powerful right kick. Costa tried to block low but the kick was high! Costa was taken right off of his feet! Puffer jumps in to finish the job and the ref tackles him! The fight is over!

After winning the bout, Brian Puffer thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
