Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Canas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jay Canas will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Matt Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jay Canas!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes misses with a combination

and Canas counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Canas.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Hughes tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Hughes looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Hughes on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hughes tries to get out of the position.
Hughes trying to keep a closed guard but Canas is proving a slippery customer.

We're going to have a standup here because Matt Hughes wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Canas looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Hughes shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Hughes takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

and Canas counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Hughes thinking.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Canas has hold of Hughes's hands but Hughes slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Hughes seems to be working for a kimura but Canas defends the submission attempt.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That was a close round but I would say that Matt Hughes will probably get the nod.

Canas feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Hughess jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Hughes moves into the clinch.
Canas tries for a takedown. No joy.

Canas is looking to take this one to the mat.
Hughes tries for a takedown but Canas manages to get underhooks.
Canas has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Hughes avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Canas regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Hughes.
Canas lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Hughes!

Hughes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Canas stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Hughes moves in looking to clinch but Canas pushes him off.

Canas looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Hughes is defending well. Canas quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Hughes has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Canas celebrates on the ropes, with the crowd.

Jay Canas decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
