The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McHale throws a right and a left that both miss.
Utter throws the left hand but McHale avoids the punch easily.
No joy there for Utter, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Utter looks for a takedown but McHale sprawls well.

so Utter counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Utter throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McHale works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

McHale is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

McHale is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Utter can do anything to dispel that myth.
McHale postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Utter wants to sweep but no luck.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Utter controls McHale momentarily but McHale frees himself.
Utter thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

McHale seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
