PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Cung Le (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nathan Wambolt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Nathan Wambolt was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Cung Le!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nathan Wambolt!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Hugh Johnson and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Le gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Le gets underhooks to prevent Wambolt's takedown attempt.
Wambolt has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Le avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Le misses with a punch on the inside.
Le prevents a takedown attempt there.
Cung Le has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nathan Wambolt.
Le lands a damaging elbow.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Wambolt has eaten all the pies!
Le lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Le tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Knees in the clinch landing for Le.
Wambolt looks gassed!
Le lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Le breaks from the clinch.

Le clinches.
Wambolt fails to pull guard.
Wambolt has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Le is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Le lands a left hand that snaps the head of Wambolt backwards.
Le crunches a lovely knee into Wambolt's ribcage.
Le lands an elbow that stopped Wambolt in his tracks for a moment.

Wambolt pulls guard successfully.
Wambolt looking to hit a scissor sweep but Le is one step ahead there.
Le will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Wambolt looking for a guillotine here but Le defends easily.
Le sitting in guard here, content to control.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Wambolt looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Wambolt is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Le controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Wambolt is looking to sweep but instead, Le has passed into half guard.
Le wants to pass to mount but Wambolt is defending the position.
Le content to control rather than advance.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Le looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Wambolt tries to get to full guard but Le has control of the leg.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Well, if Le is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Wambolt wants to improve his position but Le is controlling well.
Le content to control rather than advance.

Wambolt is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Le pulls his head out easily.

Le stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Wambolt to get to his feet.
Nice takedown defense from Le. No joy for Wambolt on that attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Wambolt wants to clinch up but Le keeps it at a distance.
Le tries to clinch but Wambolt moves out of range.

Wambolt bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Wambolt is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Le is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Le is trying to buck Wambolt off.
Le is looking for a sweep.
Le holds on to Wambolt's head and controls the position momentarily.
Le can't do much from the bottom here.
Le wants to get back to his feet but Wambolt drags him back down.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Cung Le will probably get the nod.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Wambolt walks straight into a right hand from Le - that's dropped him! Le jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Wambolt from any more punishment! Wambolt complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Cung Le!
