PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joey Kent (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jack Sparrow (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kent comes to the cage accompanied by Shoot To Thrill by AC/DC. Jack Sparrow told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joey Kent!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Sparrow!
The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Dean Styles and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sparrow looking to score a takedown here. Kent is defending well but Sparrow drives through and ends up in Kent's guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Sparrow controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Kent bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sparrow's guard.

Sparrow kicks Kent off and gets to his feet.

Kent throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Sparrow was covering up waiting for the punch and Kent finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Sparrow seems keen to control Kent's posture.
Sparrow avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kent trying to control the position from guard on top but Sparrow is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Sparrow keeping moving, preventing Kent from controlling successfully.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kent tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Sparrow swivels and escapes.

Sparrow drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Kent is trying to get back to half guard.
Kent pushes Sparrow away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Sparrow gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Kent tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sparrow wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Kent seems a little lost for a moment, as Sparrow dominates the positioning.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jack Sparrow wasn't active enough on the ground.

Kent gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Sparrow is stalling in the full guard.
Sparrow's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Kent is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Sparrow is aware though and is defending well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kent is looking to stand up but Sparrow isn't so interested in that idea.
Sparrow slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Sparrow dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Kent shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Sparrow fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Kent sprawls well initially but Sparrow persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Kent is trying to stand.
Kent makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Kent.
Sparrow's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Sparrow must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kent wants to sweep here but Sparrow controlling him for the moment.

Kent looking for a guillotine here but Sparrow defends easily.

Sparrow sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Kent working for submissions but it's allowed Sparrow to get to half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Sparrow lands a nice short elbow.

Kent trying to control from the bottom.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Sparrow in particular looking to stall.
Kent tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Sparrow has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Sparrow tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sparrow lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Sparrow avoids the attempt from Kent to control.
Kent is working to get back to half guard.
Sparrow controlling his opponent.
Kent tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sparrow takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Kent tries to hold on but Sparrow postures up.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kent is trying desperately to improve position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Sparrow showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Sparrow tries for a takedown but Kent sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Sparrow dives in and scores a takedown into Kent's guard.
Sparrow is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Kent will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Kent is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Sparrow defends well.
Sparrow won't allow Kent to sweep him here.

Kent wants to improve his position but Sparrow is controlling well.

Sparrow is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Kent has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Sparrow is working away from the top position though.

Jack Sparrow has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Sparrow forces Kent back against the cage and clinches.
Sparrow gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Kent.
Kent tries for a takedown but Sparrow manages to get underhooks.
Sparrow is defending well against a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joey Kent. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sparrow ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Sparrow no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Sparrow is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kent wants to stand and escape but instead Sparrow has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
Sparrow not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Sparrow trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Kent wants to get back to his feet but Sparrow is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Kent can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Sparrow controls the pace.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Let's hope that Sparrow has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Kent manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Joey Kent has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Sparrow tries to lock up and control but Kent gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Kent jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Sparrow is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Sparrow and Kent has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Jack Sparrow is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Jack Sparrow has got the better of the ground game so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Sparrow manages to get back to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jack Sparrow comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Sparrow has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
