PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Paulo Kang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Ooka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paul Ooka struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 187.0lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Paul Ooka acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Paulo Kang!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Paul Ooka!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Gregory Folan and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ooka throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Ooka uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Kang.
Kang throws a body punch but Ooka moves out of range.
Ooka displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Kang throws out the jab.
Ooka jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Kang gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Ooka shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Kang lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Ooka has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Ooka and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Kang scores with a nice strike.


It looks like Paul Ooka has been cut.
Kang misses with a left hand
and Ooka counters with a stiff right hand.
Some wild striking there from Ooka.
Kang tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Ooka was well out of range. Poor timing from Kang.

Kang moves into range and clinches up with Ooka.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ooka wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Kang has him pressed against the cage.
Kang swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Ooka tightens his grip and picks Kang up, before dumping him to the ground. Kang manages to land in guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Kang not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Kang tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Ooka wants to control from the top but Kang keeps moving.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Kang checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Kang tries to clinch but Ooka is having none of it.

A shot to the liver by Kang. Beautiful body shot.
Kang misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Ooka.
Ooka tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Kang paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Ooka swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Kang holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ooka drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Ooka escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Kang checks the leg kick nicely there.
Kang throws an overhand right that lands on Ooka's shoulder, as Ooka tries to avoid the shot.
Ooka walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Kang throws a sloppy head kick
and Ooka counters with a one-two to the body.

Ooka keeps the fight on the outside.
Kang attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Kang misses with a straight right.
Ooka fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Paulo Kang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Ooka.

Ooka moves out of range of the body kick from Kang.
A solid leg kick lands there for Kang.
Kang works Ooka's body with a nice hook.
Ooka slips under a jab from Kang.
A head kick misses from Ooka.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Ooka.

A slapping leg kick lands for Kang.
Kang connects with a looping right hand.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ooka slips a straight right by Kang.
Kang moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Kang thows a body shot but no joy.
Kang lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Kang bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Ooka's head.
Kang wants to clinch.
Ooka tries to clinch there but Kang circles away.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

enabling Kang to counter with a crisp jab.
Kang lands with a thumping leg kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Ooka looks to score with a jab to the body but Kang is just out of range.
Kang throws a low kick but Ooka moves out of range easily.

Ooka closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Ooka lands in his opponent's guard.
Kang is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kang looking to control but Ooka passes into half guard.
Kang wants to get back to full guard but Ooka has mounted him!
Ooka misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Ooka is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Kang to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Kang shrugs it off.

Ooka is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Kang can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Ooka is breathing heavily.
Kang is wriggling around trying to escape.
Ooka lands a nice shot to the head.
Ooka fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Ooka thowing shots but they're missing.
Kang is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Ooka unloads with some shots from mount but Kang bucks and avoids them well.

Ooka goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Kang turns into him and now he's in Ooka's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Ooka looking for a guillotine here but Kang defends easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kang slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Ooka wants to sweep but no luck.
Ooka is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Ooka is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Ooka escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Kang gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Ooka is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Ooka showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Kang throws a hook but Ooka avoids it easily.
A big left from Kang misses.
A slapping body kick lands there for Ooka.
Ooka slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Paulo Kang is winning the standup battle so far.
Ooka connects with a high kick.
Kang throws a body punch but Ooka moves out of range.
Kang keeps Ooka at a distance using the push kick.
Paul Ooka is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Ooka throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Kang slips a jab from Ooka.
Kang tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Ooka was well out of range. Poor timing from Kang.

Kang forces Ooka back against the cage and clinches.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Kang will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Ooka up against the cage.
Kang makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

Stalling in the clinch from Kang.
Kang tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Kang is looking to control Ooka's arms but Ooka gets an underhook and turns him. Now Kang has his back to the cage.

Ooka takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Ooka is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Kang is defending well.
Paulo Kang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Ooka.

Kang lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Ooka backwards.

Ooka has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Kang after a bit of a struggle.
Ooka changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Kang fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Ooka takes a shot to the body in his stride.

Kang misses with a series of wild punches.

Ooka closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Kang's guard.
Ooka throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kang works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Kang looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kang is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

And that's the end of the fight!
