PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Cody Stuart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shawn Gonzalez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gonzalez has chosen Down with the sickness as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Cody Stuart!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Shawn Gonzalez!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gonzalez blocks a head kick by Stuart.
Gonzalez tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Stuart tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Gonzalez swivels and escapes.
Stuart tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Gonzalez is able to avoid easily.
Stuart throws a head kick but Gonzalez moves out of range.
Stuart misses with a jab, cross combination.

Gonzalez gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Gonzalez pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Stuart misses with a hook to the body
and Gonzalez counters with a nice uppercut.
No luck for Gonzalez with that takedown attempt.

Gonzalez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Stuart is trying to defend but Gonzalez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Gonzalez is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.

Gonzalez stands up from half guard.
Stuart pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Nice shot lands for Gonzalez.
A slow jab from Stuart misses its intended target.
Gonzalez throws a big shot that misses.
Gonzalez throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Stuart's waist but Stuart gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gonzalez off to one side.
Stuart goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Gonzalez has taken the fight to the clinch.

Gonzalez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Stuart throws a chopping leg kick but Gonzalez manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Gonzalez tries to clinch but Stuart moves out of range.

Gonzalez blocks a head kick by Stuart.

Gonzalez looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Stuart!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Stuart is trying desperately to improve position.
Gonzalez controlling the pace for now.

Gonzalez stands up from mount. Strange move.
Stuart scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Gonzalez showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Stuart.
Gonzalez fails in his attempt to clinch.

Stuart misses with a low kick.
Gonzalez wants to clinch up but Stuart keeps it at a distance.
Gonzalez moves in looking to clinch but Stuart pushes him off.
Stuart misses with a head kick.
A solid leg kick lands there for Stuart.
Stuart throws a body kick the misses
and Gonzalez counters with a straight right hand.

Stuart fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Gonzalez, pushing him back against the cage.
Stuart tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Stuart misses with a body punch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Stuart throws an elbow that misses.
Gonzalez blocks an uppercut.
Stuart tries to work over Gonzalez's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Stuart is looking to control Gonzalez's arms but Gonzalez gets an underhook and turns him. Now Stuart has his back to the cage.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Stuart takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Stuart has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Gonzalez is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shawn Gonzalez dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Stuart lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Gonzalez has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Gonzalez and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Gonzalez tries to clinch but Stuart moves out of range.

Stuart rushes Gonzalez and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Stuart misses with some punches.
Stuart changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Gonzalez fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Cody Stuart is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Gonzalez uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Stuart.
Stuart throws a series of punches but Gonzalez avoids them all with ease.
Stuart stuffs the takedown attempt from Gonzalez. Gonzalez gets slowly back to his feet.
Stuart throws a nice looking combination but Gonzalez bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Stuart misses with a wild combination.
Stuart pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Gonzalez fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Stuart.
Stuart throws a leg kick but Gonzalez moved away.
Stuart connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Gonzalez fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Gonzalez shoots for a double leg takedown but Stuart sprawls well. He's pushed Gonzalez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Gonzalez has Stuart up against the cage in a clinch.
Gonzalez wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Stuart's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Stuart pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Stuart avoids the head kick by Gonzalez.
Stuart misses with the body kick
and Gonzalez makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Gonzalez on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Stuart. Stuart obviously looking to wear him down.
No joy there for Gonzalez, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Stuart misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Gonzalez misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Gonzalez is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Stuart attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Shawn Gonzalez seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Stuart tries to close the distance and clinch but Gonzalez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Stuart swats away the attempt to clinch by Gonzalez.

Stuart misses with a double jab.
Stuart is looking to clinch.
Stuart swings away with a leg kick that misses.

Stuart takes the fight into the clinch.
Gonzalez is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Gonzalez blocks a body shot from Stuart.

Stuart looking to stall.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
A frustrated look appears on Gonzalez's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Stuart tries for a takedown. No joy.
Gonzalez is looking to break free of the clinch but Stuart has double underhooks.

Gonzalez gets control of Stuart's arms and successfully pulls guard. Gonzalez will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Stuart content to stall in guard here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Stuart wants to pass the guard but Gonzalez is keeping the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Cody Stuart will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Stuart tries to land a leg kick but Gonzalez saw it coming and moves away.
Stuart misses with a body kick.
Stuart throws a body kick that digs right into the meat.

Gonzalez moves into the clinch.
Gonzalez working hard to break the clinch.
Gonzalez dodges an elbow strike from Stuart.

Gonzalez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Stuart throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Stuart tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gonzalez sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Stuart somewhat.
A slow jab from Stuart misses its intended target.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gonzalez doesn't manage to clinch there - Stuart circles away.
Stuart loads up on a big right hand but Gonzalez slips the punch.
Stuart throws a mid kick that lands with a slap.
Cody Stuart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gonzalez fails in his attempt to clinch.
Gonzalez wants to clinch up but Stuart keeps it at a distance.
Stuart fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Stuart shoots in for a takedown but Gonzalez shows good takedown defense.

Gonzalez closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gonzalez lands in his opponent's guard.

Stuart lands with a kick to the ribs.

Gonzalez closes the distance and pushes Stuart back into the cage.
Gonzalez scores with a shoulder strike.
Stuart lands a right hand that snaps the head of Gonzalez backwards.
Stuart keeps control of Gonzalez as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Gonzalez wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Stuart has him pressed against the cage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Gonzalez prevents a takedown attempt there.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Stuart can't break the clinch.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shawn Gonzalez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Gonzalez has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
