The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Giant fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Alves has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Alves on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Giant will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Giant's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Alves connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Giant scrambles back to his feet.

and Alves counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Alves looking to sit in guard and control but Giant gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Alves throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Giant bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Alves tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Giant wants to control from the top but Alves keeps moving.
Giant has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Alves has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Giant is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Alves.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Alves creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
