The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cunnigham misses with a takedown attempt - Szymkowiak sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Szymkowiak slaps away a takedown attempt from Cunnigham, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Szymkowiak connects with a leg kick. Cunnigham looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Szymkowiak pivots, looking for a leg kick but Cunnigham is out of range and Szymkowiak settles back down.
Szymkowiak moves out of range of the strikes.
Cunnigham thows a body shot but no joy.
Cunnigham misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Szymkowiak.

Cunnigham shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Szymkowiak pinned against the cage. Szymkowiak gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Cunnigham looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Szymkowiak is fending him off so far but Cunnigham persists. Nope, Szymkowiak circles away and we're back to standing.

Szymkowiak lands a glancing blow to the side of Cunnigham's head.

Cunnigham dives in and scores a takedown into Szymkowiak's guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Cunnigham drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Cunnigham jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cunnigham accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cunnigham has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Cunnigham drops back looking for a leg! Szymkowiak is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Szymkowiak manages to kick Cunnigham off! Cunnigham jumps back into Szymkowiak's guard.
Szymkowiak has momentary wrist control but Cunnigham slips an elbow through the middle.

Cunnigham has hold of Szymkowiak's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Szymkowiak seems comfortable defending it but Cunnigham has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Szymkowiak is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Szymkowiak is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Cunnigham couldn't care less - he's delighted!
