PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Athelston Cupp (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Josh Koscheck (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cupp comes to the cage accompanied by Seek and Destroy. Josh Koscheck told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Athelston Cupp!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Josh Koscheck!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cupp scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Athelston Cupp seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cupp misses with a jab, cross combination.

Koscheck feints and as Cupp raises his hands in defense, Koscheck changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Cupp looking for a guillotine here but Koscheck defends easily.

Cupp shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Cupp decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Koscheck keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Cupp not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Cupp is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Koscheck!

Cupp lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Koscheck can do anything to dispel that myth.
Koscheck bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Cupp pushes Koscheck off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Cupp shoots in for a takedown but Koscheck shows good takedown defense.

Cupp is trying hard to land a takedown here. Koscheck sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Cupp gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Cupp escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Cupp shoots in looking for a takedown. Koscheck tries to sprawl out of it but Cupp keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Koscheck manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Koscheck shoots in and bounces Cupp off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Koscheck not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Koscheck dives in and grabs Cupp's left leg, looking for a takedown. Cupp pushes down on Koscheck's head and hops out.
Cupp misses with a takedown attempt - Koscheck sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Cupp fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Koscheck to the ground. Cupp is now in Koscheck's guard.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cupp accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Cupp wants to control from the top but Koscheck keeps moving.

Cupp drops back looking for a leg! Koscheck is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Koscheck manages to kick Cupp off! Cupp jumps back into Koscheck's guard.

Koscheck utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Cupp stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Koscheck swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Koscheck pushes Cupp off and gets back to his feet.
Cupp misses with an uppercut. Koscheck saw that one coming.
Koscheck keeps the fight on the outside.

and Koscheck decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cupp's guard.
Cupp wants to sweep but no luck.
Cupp doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Koscheck tries to free his leg and advance position but Cupp is retaining full guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Koscheck stands up from Cupp's guard - Koscheck perhaps looking for a knockout.
Cupp tries to clinch but Koscheck moves out of range.
Cupp looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Koscheck is fending him off so far but Cupp persists. Nope, Koscheck circles away and we're back to standing.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Athelston Cupp has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Josh Koscheck.

Nice takedown defense from Koscheck. No joy for Cupp on that attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Cupp moves into the clinch.
Cupp is looking to take this one to the mat.
Koscheck is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Cupp tries to break free but Koscheck pushes him back against the cage.

Cupp pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
No joy there for Cupp, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Cupp tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Koscheck paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Koscheck gets a takedown into half guard.
Koscheck prevents Cupp from improving his position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Koscheck works his way into side control.
Koscheck passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Cupp!

Koscheck is standing up, even though he is in mount.
Cupp looks to clinch

and Koscheck counters with a nice double leg into side control. Cupp won't be happy with that.

Koscheck decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cupp throws a head kick that Koscheck semi-blocks.

And that's the end of the fight!
Josh Koscheck comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Cupp has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
