PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sanji Cook (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Costa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Costa is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by 26 Bass by Roni Size. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sanji Cook!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Carlos Costa!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, William Peck and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cook misses with a kick to the body.

Cook looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Cook moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.

Costa forces Cook back against the cage and clinches.

Costa breaks from the clinch.
Cook checks a leg kick nicely.
Cook connects with a right hand. Costa shakes it off.

Cook darts in and clinches Costa up against the cage.
Cook trying to stall but Costa improves his position.
Cook misses with a knee to the head.
Cook prevents a takedown attempt there.

Costa jumps guard.
Costa looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cook is one step ahead there.
Cook knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Costa on the ground.
Cook stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Costa swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Cook wants to control from the top but Costa keeps moving.

Costa is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Cook defends well.

Costa had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Cook defends it easily.
Cook controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Costa escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Cook gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Costa has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Cook can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Cook slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Cook pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Costa is keeping the position for now.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The ref stands the fighters back up because Sanji Cook just wasn't active enough.
That kick from Cook tenderised Costa's leg. Costa is trying to keep his angry face on.

Costa throws a strike aimed at the side of Cook's head but Cook avoids it well.
Cook tries to bench press Costa off him but Costa keeps the position.

Costa is pressing down on Cook's thigh, looking to free his foot. Cook is holding on for now.
Costa is looking to take a break and control but Cook is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Cook wants to control but Costa is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Cook lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.

Costa swats away the attempt to clinch by Cook.

Cook throws a leg kick which misses Costa's front leg but catches the back leg as Costa tries to avoid it.
Costa takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Costa avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
The fight stays on the outside here - Cook looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

and Costa counters with a combination of strikes to the head and body that crumple Cook!

Cook is looking for a sweep. Costa is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Costa seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Costa tries to pass the half guard into mount. Cook knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Sanji Cook has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Cook dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Costa. That did some damage!

The referee is keeping an eye on Cook - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Costa has hold of one of Cook's legs. Cook is fighting the takedown attempt but Costa gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sanji Cook.
I think Costa has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
