PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sergei Sokolov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Castle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Frank Castle told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sergei Sokolov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Frank Castle!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksandr Martynov and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Castle fails with a takedown attempt.
Sokolov lands a glancing blow to the side of Castle's head.
A lazy left from Sokolov finds it's target.
Sokolov misses with a looping left.
Castle moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Sokolov throws an overhand right that lands on Castle's shoulder, as Castle tries to avoid the shot.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Castle is defended easily by Sokolov.
Sokolov uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Sokolov misses the jab.
A big left from Sokolov misses.
Sokolov missing with a left hand there. Castle was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Castle shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Sokolov is trying to defend but Castle finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Sokolov is looking to escape.
Castle wants to pass the guard but Sokolov is defending well.
Castle is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Castle passes to full mount!
Castle throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Sokolov tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Castle throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Sokolov because Castle loaded up on that one.

Castle takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Castle looking to control but Sokolov is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

Castle is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Sokolov has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Castle has control of Sokolov's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Sokolov regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Castle with shots to the head and body - Sokolov looks very uncomfortable down there.

Castle misses with a head shot.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sokolov is squirming around, avoiding Castle's attempts to control the action.

Castle jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Sokolov is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Sokolov and Castle has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Check out the look on Castle's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That's time! Sokolov's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Castle tries to close the distance and clinch but Sokolov swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Castle shoots in for a takedown but Sokolov shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Sokolov pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Castle back to the cage. Sokolov follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Castle lands a body punch in the clinch.
Castle tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.

Castle manages to break the clinch.
Sokolov comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Sokolov paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Sokolov defending well as Castle loads up on a big left hand.
Sokolov swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Castle throws a front kick aimed at Sokolov's knee but Sokolov avoids it well.
Sokolov defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Castle.
Castle lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Sokolov circles away quickly and effectively.
Castle throws a head kick that misses.
Castle moves out of range of the strikes.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Castle is defended easily by Sokolov.
Sergei Sokolov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Frank Castle.

enabling Sokolov to counter with a crisp jab.
Castle looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sokolov is fending him off so far but Castle persists. Nope, Sokolov circles away and we're back to standing.
Castle is breathing heavily.
Sokolov throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Castle wants to clinch up but Sokolov keeps it at a distance.

Castle will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Castle is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Sokolov.
Frank Castle seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sokolov lands with a hook. Castle tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Sokolov is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Castle is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sokolov knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Castle shoots in looking for a takedown. Sokolov tries to sprawl out of it but Castle keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sokolov manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Frank Castle is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Castle keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Sokolov's efforts to push away.

Castle is starting to get sloppy and is letting his hands down. Sokolov just took advantage and landed a stinging jab. Oh! Now a right hook, right on the button! Castle has gone limp and this one is over!
