PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Owen Schmitt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sepp Maier (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Schmitt comes into the arena with In God We Trust - Stryper blaring out of the sound system. Maier has chosen Apaga mas não bate as his entrance music. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Owen Schmitt!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 11 - 0, fighting out of London, Sepp Maier!
The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Daniel Bishop and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Maier fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Schmitt, pushing him back against the cage.
Maier is working for takedown but Schmitt is calmly controlling the position for now.
Maier is looking for a takedown.
Schmitt wants to break free but Maier has control.

Maier has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Schmitt uses from the top position.

Maier escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Schmitt gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Schmitt working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Maier doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Maier manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Maier thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Maier stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Schmitt swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Schmitt pushes Maier off and gets back to his feet.

Schmitt swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Schmitt misses with an uppercut.
Schmitt throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Maier ducks under a wild hook from Schmitt.
Maier tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Maier fails to land the takedown.
Owen Schmitt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sepp Maier.

Schmitt tries to score with a low kick but Maier moves his leg out of the way.

Schmitt loads up on a big right hand but Maier slips the punch.
Maier defending well as Schmitt loads up on a big left hand.
Schmitt just misses with a punch to the body.
Schmitt looks to score with a jab to the body but Maier is just out of range.
Maier takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Maier ducks under a wild hook from Schmitt.
Maier ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Horrible takedown by Maier or perhaps it was just good defense by Schmitt which made him look bad.
Maier avoids the body shot from Schmitt.

Schmitt throws a sloppy head kick and Maier moves out of range easily.
Schmitt misses with a looping right.

Maier scores a takedown into full mount!
Schmitt slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Maier wants to pass to mount but Schmitt is defending the position.
Schmitt wants to control but Maier is keeping busy.
Schmitt gets full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Schmitt can't keep his opponent in guard - Maier advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Maier is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Maier wants to free his trapped foot but Schmitt is holding on for dear life with his legs.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Owen Schmitt will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Schmitt lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

Maier shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Maier is looking for a kimura but Schmitt is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Maier to get the leverage.

Schmitt is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Maier pulls his head out easily.

Schmitt is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Schmitt is looking for a triangle but Maier pushes his legs off easily.
Maier working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Schmitt lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Maier!

Maier is in a horrible position here. Schmitt smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Schmitt here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Maier is bucking up trying to escape but Schmitt cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Maier is desperately trying to improve his position but Schmitt has a good base and remains in mount.
Schmitt connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Owen Schmitt overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Schmitt is in the full mount, landing strikes.


Maier is rocked!
Schmitt connects with a bit shot that sees Maier covering up! More strikes from Schmitt and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Schmitt is our winner by TKO!
