PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Max Speed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Laging Pakpak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Max Speed!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Laging Pakpak!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Steve Montenegro and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Speed drives through with a takedown into guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Speed tries to free his leg and advance position but Pakpak is retaining full guard.

Pakpak is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Speed defends well.
Speed controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Speed knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Pakpak on the ground.
Speed trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Pakpak looking for a sweep. Not yet Pakpak, not yet.
Pakpak keeping moving, preventing Speed from controlling successfully.

Pakpak has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Speed can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Speed has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pakpak is proving hard to escape from.
Speed trying to control the position from guard on top but Pakpak is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Speed sitting in guard, not really doing much.

We're going to have a standup here because Max Speed wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Speed just misses with a punch to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pakpak tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Speed plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Speed shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Speed showed some decent athleticism there.
Pakpak is trying to maintain the position but Speed is very close to passing his half guard.
Pakpak is staying active underneath Speed, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Speed is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Pakpak has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Speed tries to stand but can't do so whilst Pakpak controls his leg.
Speed slows the pace down in half guard.
Pakpak trying to hold on to Speed's head to control him but Speed postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pakpak slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Speed throwing strikes but missing.
Speed in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Speed has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pakpak is proving hard to escape from.
Pakpak bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Speed's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Max Speed dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Speed shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Speed throws some wild stikes that Pakpak manages to avoid easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Speed sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Speed trying to control but Pakpak is having none of it.
Pakpak tries to lock up and control but Speed gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Max Speed overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Pakpak regains half guard.

Speed decides to return to a standing position.
Pakpak shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Speed throws a nice outside leg kick.
Max Speed is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Speed decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Speed wants to take a breather but Pakpak is having none of it.
Speed controlling the action here.
Pakpak is looking for a sweep. Speed is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Pakpak gets back to full guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Max Speed just wasn't active enough.

Speed moves into the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Speed has Pakpak pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Speed pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Pakpak tumbling to the mat - Speed dives into Pakpak's guard.
Speed's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Speed throws a strike but Pakpak rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Speed will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Pakpak tries to stand but Speed is controlling from the bottom.
Speed keeping moving, preventing Pakpak from controlling successfully.
Speed is adopting a defensive guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Max Speed has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Speed moves into the clinch.

Speed drags the fight down to the ground.

Pakpak thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Speed is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Pakpak advances position into side control!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pakpak wants to control but Speed is keeping him busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Max Speed dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Pakpak tries to keep at a distance but Speed has taken the fight into the clinch.

Speed pulls Pakpak into guard.
Pakpak trying to control the position from guard on top but Speed is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pakpak won't allow Speed to sweep him here.
Pakpak postures up.
Speed looking for a sweep. Not yet Speed, not yet.
Pakpak loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Pakpak pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Speed is keeping the position for now.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Pakpak is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pakpak wants to stand but Speed has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A solid leg kick lands there for Pakpak.

Speed bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Pakpak regains half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Speed is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Pakpak reverses the position - he's now on top in Speed's guard.

Pakpak drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pakpak jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Speed avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Speed working a defensive guard here.

Pakpak stands up from Speed's guard - Pakpak perhaps looking for a knockout.
Pakpak shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Speed as he jumps to the side.
Laging Pakpak has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
This has been an exciting period of action!

Speed drives through and clinches with Pakpak against the cage.
Speed is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Pakpak is defending well for now.

Speed pulls guard effortlessly.
Pakpak preventing the sweep.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Speed is trying to keep Pakpak in close.
Pakpak trying to control the position from guard on top but Speed is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pakpak pushing down on Speed's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Pakpak throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Speed tries to get to full guard but Pakpak has control of the leg.
Pakpak thows a huge punch but Speed dodges it nicely.
Speed is trying to get back to full guard.
Pakpak frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pakpak trying to control but Speed is having none of it.
Speed is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Poor strikes thrown by Pakpak there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Pakpak looking to secure an arm triangle but Speed defends it well.
Speed is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Speed tries to hold on but Pakpak pushes him away.
Max Speed is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Pakpak thowing shots but they're missing.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Laging Pakpak.
Well Speed has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
