PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jack Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Charlie Cote (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Charlie Cote is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jack Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Charlie Cote!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Franklyn Lucas and Anthony Taglia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Johnson misses with a body shot.
Cote takes a swing at Johnson's ribcage but misses.
Cote tries to close the distance and clinch but Johnson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Cote tries to clinch up.
Cote moves in looking to clinch but Johnson pushes him off.
Cote avoids a kick to the body.
Cote shoots in for a double leg but Johnson sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Johnson gets tackled into the cage by Cote. Cote maintains the clinch.

Johnson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Johnson moves into the clinch successfully.
Cote tries to pull guard but Johnson holds him up against the cage and eventually Cote drops back down to his feet.
Johnson wants a takedown but no success here.

Johnson breaks from the clinch.
Cote tries to score a power double leg takedown but Johnson sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cote somewhat.
Jack Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Charlie Cote.

Johnson moves into range and clinches up with Cote.
Cote has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Johnson avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Cote has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Cote has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Johnson regains guard immediately.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Johnson is adopting a defensive guard.
Johnson bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Cote's guard.
Johnson is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Johnson seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Cote for as long as he can get away with.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Cote is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Johnson is aware though and is defending well.
Cote should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Johnson decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Cote fails in his attempt to clinch.
Johnson lands with a slapping head kick.
Cote misses with a hook.
Johnson throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Johnson throws a leg kick but Cote moved away.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
A cross from Johnson lands.
Charlie Cote seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cote moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Johnson works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Cote works over Johnson's head and body with a nice combination.

Johnson tries to sprawl but Cote drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Cote decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Johnson lands with a thumping leg kick.
Cote tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Johnson fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Cote, pushing him back against the cage.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Johnson.
Johnson tries a knee to the head but Cote blocks it.
Come on Johnson - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Johnson has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Cote is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Johnson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Johnson manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Cote on his heels. He'll look to pass Cote's guard now, I'm sure.
Cote is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Johnson is controlling him.
Johnson is working Cote over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Cote is trying to keep Johnson in close.
Johnson slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Johnson postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Cote wants to get back to his feet but Johnson passes into half guard.
Cote is breathing heavily.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Johnson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Johnson connects with a nice short shot to Cote's temple.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Cote in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
The referee warns Cote that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Johnson keeps the fight on the outside.
Johnson lets loose with a powerful body kick. Cote will feel that in the morning.
Johnson swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Johnson connects with a leg kick. Cote looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.

Cote takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Johnson is looking for a kimura but Cote is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Johnson to get the leverage.

Cote really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Johnson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Johnson seems to be looking for submissions.

Jack Johnson has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Johnson looks to score with a jab to the body but Cote is just out of range.
Johnson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Johnson wants it to stay on the feet.
Jack Johnson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Charlie Cote.

Cote will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Johnson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Johnson wants to finish this one by submission but Cote is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Johnson.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well Johnson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
