PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tomasz Franusik (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Goran Spaten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Spaten comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Check Yo' Self before you Wreck Yo' Self by Ice Cube kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Tomasz Franusik!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Goran Spaten!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Richard Clark and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Spaten looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Spaten closes the distance looking to clinch

and Franusik counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Spaten is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Franusik scores with a couple of nice shots.
Spaten regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Franusik.

Franusik decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Spaten, up you get!
Franusik swings away with a body shot that misses
and Spaten counters with a low kick, right behind Franusik 's knee.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Spaten moves in looking to clinch but Franusik pushes him off.
Franusik shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Spaten as he avoids it easily.

Spaten shoots for a double leg takedown but Franusik sprawls well. He's pushed Spaten's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Franusik has Spaten up against the ropes in a clinch.

Franusik shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Franusik tries to pass to full mount but Spaten defends it.

Franusik wants to advance to full mount but Spaten doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Franusik stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Spaten swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Franusik shoots for a double leg takedown but Spaten sprawls well. He's pushed Franusik's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Franusik is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Spaten defends it well.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Spaten is trying to control but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Spaten shoots in looking for a takedown. Franusik tries to sprawl out of it but Spaten keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the ropes. Franusik manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

and Franusik counters with a shoot takedown. Spaten fights it but they end up in guard.
Franusik stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Spaten swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Spaten is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Franusik is aware though and is defending well.
Franusik advances to half guard.
Franusik is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Spaten!

Franusik lands a big elbow.
Franusik punishing his opponent with strikes.
Franusik tries to control but Spaten wriggling away.
Spaten blocking the ground and pound.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Franusik trying to control but Spaten is having none of it.
Spaten avoids a strike by Franusik and manages to complete a very nice reversal in the process, to end up in Franusik's guard! Fantastic escape!

Franusik has his foot on Spaten's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Spaten works his way back into a safe position though.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Spaten accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Spaten drops back, looking for a kneebar! Franusik looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Franusik looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Franusik!
Spaten is trying to control Franusik's posture but Franusik avoids it.

Franusik working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

An elbow from Franusik crashes against the mat.

Franusik is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Spaten knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Spaten prevents Franusik from improving position.

Franusik tries to advance position but instead Spaten slips a leg back in to half guard.
Spaten trying to hold on to Franusik's head to control him but Franusik postures up.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Franusik seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Nice sprawl there from Franusik as Spaten shoots in.
Spaten displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Franusik.
Spaten doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Spaten shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Franusik as he jumps to the side.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Franusik is defended easily by Spaten.

Spaten leaves Franusik with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Spaten goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Franusik turns into him and now he's in Spaten's guard.

We're going to have a standup here because Tomasz Franusik wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Spaten moves in looking to clinch but Franusik pushes him off.

Franusik manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Spaten on his heels. He'll look to pass Spaten's guard now, I'm sure.

Spaten is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Franusik trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Spaten manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Spaten drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Franusik manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Spaten has Franusik in his guard.
Franusik wants to stand but Spaten is controlling his posture from full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tomasz Franusik showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Franusik, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
