PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Robert Powell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benedict Betenson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Powell comes into the arena with Thndrkss 65 blaring out of the sound system. Betenson has chosen Big Bang Baby by STP as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Benedict Betenson!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Colin Fotheringham and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horrible takedown by Betenson or perhaps it was just good defense by Powell which made him look bad.
Powell stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Powell wants it to stay on the feet.

Powell closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Betenson's guard.
Powell lands a couple of elbows.
Powell won't allow Betenson to get back to his feet.
Powell throws a big right hand that misses.
Powell lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Powell postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Betenson wants to stand but Powell is controlling the position.
Powell cracks Betenson with a solid left hand.
Powell engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Betenson is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Powell won't allow Betenson to sweep him here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Powell prevents Betenson from getting back to his feet.
Powell pushing down on Betenson's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Powell thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Betenson to regain full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Powell lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Betenson looks gassed!

Powell drops back, looking for a kneebar! Betenson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Betenson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Betenson!

Betenson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Powell keeps working.
Powell is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Betenson's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Betenson's back!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Powell is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Betenson knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Betenson for a finish.
Powell lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Powell holds on and takes a little breather.

Powell had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Betenson defends it easily.
Betenson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Powell. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Betenson wants to stand but Powell has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Powell wants to sweep but no luck.
Betenson working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.

Powell kicks Betenson off and gets to his feet.
Powell misses with a left hand

and Betenson counters with a nice double leg into side control. Powell won't be happy with that.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Powell wants to control but Betenson postures up.
Betenson misses with an attempted head punch from side control.

Betenson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Betenson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Betenson should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Powell is trying to control Betenson's posture but Betenson avoids it.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Powell dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Powell tries to clinch up but Betenson circles away and keeps his distance.
Betenson shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Powell eats them both and turns towards Betenson to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.


It looks like Robert Powell has been cut.
Powell keeps the fight on the outside.
Robert Powell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Betenson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Powell sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Betenson somewhat.

Betenson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Powell napping and manages to drive through into side control!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The strikes coming from Betenson are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Betenson lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Powell jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Betenson walks away with a smile on his face. Powell gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Powell looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Betenson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Betenson wants to stall.
Still in the clinch, Betenson scores with a nice short uppercut.
Betenson can't break the clinch.

Betenson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Betenson misses with a body kick.
Powell on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Betenson shoots in and gets a takedown into Powell's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Betenson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Powell swivels though and keeps the full guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Benedict Betenson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Betenson throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Powell's waist but Powell gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Betenson off to one side.
Betenson displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Powell.
Benedict Betenson seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Powell throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Betenson sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Betenson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Powell tries to avoid it but Betenson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Powell to the ground. Powell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

The fight stays on the outside here - Betenson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Betenson pushes Powell away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Powell gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Robert Powell overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Powell decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Betenson shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Powell defends it nicely.
Robert Powell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Benedict Betenson.
Betenson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Powell changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Betenson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Betenson can do anything to dispel that myth.

Powell is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Betenson defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Betenson controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.
Powell connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Betenson to escape the position.
Powell lands with a hammerfist to the side of Betenson's head.
Powell lands a punch that was close to the back of the head but the ref thinks it's OK.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Powell is punishing Betenson with some ground and pound.
Betenson is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Robert Powell showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Powell has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
