PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Sebastian Granite (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Markus Wilander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Sebastian Granite!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Markus Wilander!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Marco Blurström and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fighters circling - Granite throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Wilander steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Granite.
Wilander closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Sebastian Granite seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Granite throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Wilander feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Granite wants to stand up but Wilander is controlling him.

Wilander wants to work for an arm triangle but Granite is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Wilander avoids the attempt from Granite to control.
Wilander takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

I looks like Wilander might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Despite being in the dominant position, Markus Wilander just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Wilander uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Granite.

Wilander rushes Granite and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Wilander stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Granite swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

No joy there for Granite, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Wilander tries a knee to the head but Granite blocks it.

Wilander is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Wilander manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Granite manages to get himself to full guard.
Wilander works over Granite with some ground and pound from guard.
Wilander looking to sit in guard and control but Granite gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Wilander has his foot on Granite's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Granite works his way back into a safe position though.

Wilander working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Granite doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Granite manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Granite is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Wilander breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Granite throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Wilander sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Wilander drives through and clinches with Granite against the cage.
Wilander scores with a knee to the head.

Wilander comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

Wilander escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Come on Wilander - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Granite takes a knee right on the jaw!
Wilander stalls.
Wilander comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush.

Wilander is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Granite scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.

That's nine minutes gone in the round.
Granite fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Wilander avoids a punch combination nicely.

Wilander forces Granite back against the cage and clinches.
Granite dodges an elbow strike from Wilander.
Granite is trying to break the clinch but Wilander has him pressed against the cage.
Granite is looking to control Wilander's arms but Wilander gets an underhook and turns him. Now Granite has his back to the cage.

Wilander breaks the clinch.
Wilander changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Granite tries to avoid it but Wilander manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Granite to the ground. Granite escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
A left and a right from Granite both land. Nice combination.
Wilander takes a jab right on the kisser.
Granite misses with a wild combination.
Nice uppercut there from Granite.
Granite stalks Wilander and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Wilander's face. Wilander staggers backwards, shaken.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Markus Wilander dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Wilander doesn't manage to clinch there - Granite circles away.


Wilander is rocked!
Granite lands a right hook to the body.
Wilander is still on wobbly legs! Can Granite finish him?
Granite lands with a precision combination! Left, right, uppercut and Wilander falls flat on his face, eyes wide open but he's out!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:14 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Sebastian Granite!
