PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Marlin McCann (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stevie Chivers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McCann comes into the arena with Highway to Hell (AC/DC) blaring out of the sound system. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Stevie Chivers was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Marlin McCann!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Stevie Chivers!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Paul Tew and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McCann moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
McCann misses with a takedown attempt

and Chivers counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Chivers trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but McCann manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!
Chivers not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Chivers is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst McCann is controlling him.
Chivers looking to hit a scissor sweep but McCann is one step ahead there.
McCann has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Stevie Chivers has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

McCann clinches with his opponent.

McCann tries to circle away but Chivers has him pinned against the cage.

Chivers turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Chivers manages to end up in side control.

Chivers is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but McCann is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chivers laying and praying for a moment but McCann takes advantage and regains half guard.
Chivers is stalling here. McCann is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Chivers seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and McCann has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

McCann has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Chivers looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
McCann stuffs the takedown attempt from Chivers. Chivers gets slowly back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chivers ducks right into an uppercut from McCann.
Chivers shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as McCann sprawls well. McCann wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Chivers gets slowly back to his feet.

Chivers shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts McCann as he jumps to the side.
Chivers shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has McCann pinned against the cage. McCann gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

McCann bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

Chivers tries for a takedown but McCann sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Chivers with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling McCann to score with a decent uppercut.

McCann drives through with a takedown into guard.

McCann decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Chivers, up you get!
McCann connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.

McCann rushes Chivers and presses him up against the cage.
McCann controlling the action here for a moment.
McCann is trying to force a seperation but Chivers has the dominant position.

McCann wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Chivers has him pressed against the cage.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting McCann here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
McCann working hard to break the clinch.
McCann gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Chivers.
Chivers tries to score a body lock takedown but McCann shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
McCann is trying to force a seperation but Chivers has the dominant position.
McCann stops a takedown attempt from Chivers.
McCann has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Chivers shoots in for a takedown but McCann shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
McCann misses with a wild body shot.

Chivers has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Chivers there as he acknowledges the shot.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from McCann is defended easily by Chivers.

McCann feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

McCann is standing up over Chivers. Chivers looks to escape but McCann dives into side control.

McCann stands up.
Nice takedown defense from McCann. No joy for Chivers on that attempt.

Chivers takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
McCann stuffs the takedown.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

McCann's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

McCann drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
McCann stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Chivers swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Marlin McCann overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

McCann gets to his feet - Chivers follows without any prompting.
Chivers misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Stevie Chivers seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and McCann counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Chivers is rocked!
McCann perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Chivers is looking for a sweep. McCann is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Marlin McCann.

McCann is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Chivers can do to turn this around?
A jab from McCann finds it's way through Chivers's defenses.
McCann paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Well McCann has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
