PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mel Menson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Otou Hek (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Menson comes to the cage accompanied by Back Up. The crowd seem to be enjoying Hek's choice of entrance music: Tha Playah. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mel Menson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Otou Hek!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Paulsen Ambrosius and Aafke Stam.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hek gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Menson loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Menson trying to control but Hek is working from the bottom.
Menson wants to pass the guard but Hek is keeping the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.

We're going to have a standup here because Mel Menson wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Hek tries to clinch but Menson moves out of range.

Menson manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Hek on his heels. He'll look to pass Hek's guard now, I'm sure.

Menson closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Menson decides to stand back up.

Menson shoots in and bounces Hek off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Menson is breathing heavily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Hek misses with a takedown attempt - Menson sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Menson throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Hek's head.
Menson keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

Menson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Hek to the ground. Menson is now in Hek's guard.

Menson looking to sit in guard and control but Hek gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Menson looking for a guillotine here but Hek defends easily.
Menson is trying to control the position from the bottom.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hek scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mel Menson dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Menson moves into the clinch.
Hek is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Hek tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Menson just stands there and leans against the cage.

Menson manages to break the clinch.

Menson closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Hek's guard.
Hek keeping moving, preventing Menson from controlling successfully.

Menson dives in and scores a takedown into Hek's guard.
Hek looking to hit a scissor sweep but Menson is one step ahead there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Mel Menson just wasn't active enough.

Hek gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Menson to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Menson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hek napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Menson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hek napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Menson thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Menson tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

Menson working the strikes but Hek uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
Menson missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Mel Menson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hek trying to control but Menson postures up.

Menson looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mel Menson dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Menson shoots in but no luck this time.
Hek has his takedown stuffed

and Menson counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Menson wants to pass the guard but Hek is defending well.
Menson is taking a breather. Hek says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Mel Menson has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Menson forces Hek back against the cage and clinches.
Hek is trying to break the clinch but Menson is controlling him.

Menson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Hek with a poor takedown

so Menson counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hek keeping moving, preventing Menson from controlling successfully.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Mel Menson.

Menson dives in and scores a takedown into Hek's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Hek controls Menson momentarily but Menson frees himself.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Menson darts in and clinches Hek up against the cage.

Hek is fighting off a takedown attempt but Menson is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Hek to the mat. Hek regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Menson wants to control from the top but Hek keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Mel Menson just wasn't active enough.
Hek shoots in looking for a takedown but Menson manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Hek's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Mel Menson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Otou Hek.
Menson plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Menson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hek tries to avoid it but Menson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hek to the ground. Hek escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Hek closes the distance and clinches up with Menson, looking for a takedown. Hek pushes Menson against the cage but Menson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Menson drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Menson looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Hek is avoiding damage well.
Hek manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Menson manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Menson throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Hek tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Menson is in Hek's guard.

Otou Hek has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Mel Menson has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Hek shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Menson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Menson stands up from Hek's guard - Menson perhaps looking for a knockout.
Hek shoots in and drives through. Menson sprawls well.
Otou Hek seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

and Menson holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Mel Menson is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Mel Menson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Menson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
