PBP Commentary

Martin kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Face the Pain. Derek Sanders has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Ricoco Martin's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Derek Sanders!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, John Kavanagh and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martin dives in and grabs Sanders's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sanders pushes down on Martin's head and hops out.
Martin doesn't succeed with the takedown
enabling Sanders to counter with a crisp jab.
Martin shoots in for a double leg but Sanders sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ricoco Martin. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Martin wants to clinch up but Sanders keeps it at a distance.

Martin has managed to clinch.

Martin gets control of Sanders's arms and successfully pulls guard. Martin will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Sanders stands up and waves to Martin to follow him.

Sanders closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Martin takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Martin tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Martin throws a sloppy head kick and Sanders moves out of range easily.
Martin is breathing heavily.

Sanders avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Martin tries to clinch up but Sanders circles away and keeps his distance.
Sanders uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Martin has time to react.
Sanders bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Martin misses with a double jab
and Sanders counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Martin tries to clinch there but Sanders circles away.
Sanders lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Sanders moves into range and connects with a jab.

Sanders throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Martin on the side of the head.
Sanders scores with a decent looking hook.
Sanders wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Sanders listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Sanders uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Sanders smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Martin tries for a takedown but Sanders sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Martin shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Sanders pinned against the cage. Sanders gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Martin gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Ricoco Martin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Martin misses with a takedown attempt
and Sanders counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Martin takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Sanders is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Martin had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Martin with a lazy takedown attempt
and Sanders counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Martin has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Martin there as he acknowledges the shot.
A nice combination there by Sanders.
Martin takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Martin with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Sanders to score with a decent uppercut.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Sanders scores with a jab to the jaw.
Martin takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Jab, jab by Sanders - just one landing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derek Sanders dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Martin throws out a leg kick but Sanders moves out of range and Martin only half commits.

Martin clinches up with Sanders and pushes him back against the cage.
Sanders tries to break the clinch but Martin is controlling the position.

Martin breaks the clinch.
Martin shoots and misses
and Martin takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Sanders works Martin's body with a nice hook.

Sanders circles away from the clinch attempt.
Martin looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.
Sanders shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Martin eats them both and turns towards Sanders to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Martin takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Sanders has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.

Martin has taken the fight to the clinch.

Martin keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Sanders's efforts to push away.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Martin wants to stall.
Sanders is trying to break the clinch but Martin has him pressed against the cage.
Sanders is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Martin creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Martin jumps guard but Sanders stands there with Martin around his waist. Martin gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Sanders can't break the clinch.
Sanders wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Martin tries to land a knee to the head but Sanders blocks with his arms.

Sanders is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Sanders catches Martin with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!

Derek Sanders seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Derek Sanders is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sanders pounces like a tiger and cracks Martin with a vicious hook! Martin is down but not out! Sanders follows up with more strikes forcing the ref to jump in and stop it!
