Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 13 - 0, fighting out of New York, Evgeni Novikov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Patrick Gap!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, John Roberts and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gap misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Novikov.
Gap tries to clinch up but Novikov circles away and keeps his distance.
Gap is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Gap closes the distance and clinches up with Novikov, looking for a takedown. Gap pushes Novikov against the cage but Novikov circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Gap shoots in and drives through. Novikov sprawls well.
Gap misses the shot to the body.
An inside leg kick from Gap misses.
Gap uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Novikov.
Patrick Gap seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

A head kick from Gap lands but Novikov takes it in his stride.

Gap swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Novikov tries to clinch there but Gap circles away.
Novikov chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Gap can pounce on him.
Novikov is breathing heavily.
Gap tries to clinch up but Novikov circles away and keeps his distance.
Novikov throws a body punch but Gap moves out of range.
Novikov just misses with a punch to the body.
A low kick from Gap misses
and Novikov counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Gap wants to clinch.

Gap closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gap lands in his opponent's guard.

Gap gets to his feet. Novikov looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Gap doesn't manage to clinch there - Novikov circles away.
Gap is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Novikov rather than just go for the knockout.

Gap looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Novikov might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gap landing with the ground and pound.
Gap wants to control from the top but Novikov keeps moving.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gap accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Gap throws a series of punches but Novikov moves out of range.
A punch combination from Gap misses.
Gap fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Novikov has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Novikov misses the shot to the body.
Gap throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Gap connects with a crisp jab.

Gap shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Novikov napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Novikov is trying to get back to half guard.
Gap controlling the position from side mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Novikov is looking for a sweep.

Gap is looking to take a break and control but Novikov is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Gap content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Patrick Gap was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Gap misses with a head kick.
No joy there for Gap, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Gap is looking to clinch.

Novikov throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Gap lands a left and a right that send Novikov crashing to the mat, dazed. Gap thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gap shoots in but Novikov avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Gap has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Horrible takedown by Gap or perhaps it was just good defense by Novikov which made him look bad.

Gap moves into range and clinches up with Novikov.
Novikov pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Gap goes for a takedown in the clinch but Novikov prevents it.
Evgeni Novikov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Patrick Gap.
Novikov misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Gap is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Novikov can't fight it off and eventually Gap manages to take the fight to the floor. Novikov looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Gap must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Gap is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Patrick Gap has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Gap ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Gap tries to bum rush Novikov with a series of wild strikes but Novikov uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Gap closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Novikov did well to prevent Gap getting side control.

Patrick Gap showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Novikov digs a right hand into Gap's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Gap's gas tank.

Gap bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Novikov's guard.
Gap wants to control from the top but Novikov keeps moving.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Patrick Gap was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Gap throws a leg kick
and Novikov counters with a straight right hand.

Gap shoots in and gets a takedown into Novikov's guard.

Novikov wants to control the position but Gap says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Gap tries to stand but can't do so whilst Novikov controls his leg.
Patrick Gap has got the better of the ground game so far.

Gap escapes and gets back to his feet.

Gap tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Novikov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Gap tries to score a power double leg takedown but Novikov sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gap somewhat.
Novikov shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Gap defends it nicely.
Novikov defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Gap.
Evgeni Novikov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Patrick Gap.

Gap decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Gap lands with a nice combination. Novikov backs away looking to recover.
Patrick Gap is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Gap shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Gap showed some decent athleticism there.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Gap looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
