Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between DJ Benn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tyrone Phillips (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Benn comes to the cage accompanied by Geto Boys - Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tyrone Phillips!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Stewart Dunkirk and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Benn pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Phillips throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Benn.
Benn connects with the punch.

Phillips shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Benn actively working from the bottom here.
Benn wants to improve his position but Phillips is controlling well.
Nice strikes from Phillips there.
Phillips wants to pass the guard but Benn is defending well.
Benn is looking to control Phillips's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Benn avoid being mounted?
Benn is pressing down on Phillips's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Benn escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Phillips gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Benn is breathing heavily.
Phillips looking to pass the guard.
Phillips must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Benn has his foot on Phillips's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Phillips works his way back into a safe position though.

Phillips drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Benn dives on top into guard.

Phillips explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work.
Phillips wants to clinch up but Benn keeps it at a distance.
Phillips lands a head kick. Benn smiles back at him and beckons him forward.


It looks like DJ Benn has been cut.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Phillips moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Benn connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Phillips momentarily.
Phillips throws an off balance right hand
and Benn counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Phillips rushes Benn and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Phillips breaks the clinch.
Phillips takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Benn connects with the punch.
Phillips shoots for a takedown but Benn saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Phillips takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.

Phillips closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Phillips stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Benn to get to his feet.
Benn scores with a jab. Phillips acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Benn fails with the takedown.
Benn dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
A combination from Benn does no damage.
Benn throws a body kick the misses

and Phillips counters by moving into the clinch.
Benn is working for takedown but Phillips is calmly controlling the position for now.

Phillips breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Benn lands a nice shot to the body.
Benn throws a series of strikes that have Phillips backpedaling.
Phillips misses with a double jab

and Benn counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Benn.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Phillips can do anything to dispel that myth.

Benn is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Benn lands a couple of digs.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Benn stands and throws Phillips's legs to the side, diving into side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Benn works to advance to full mount. Phillips defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Benn tries to control but Phillips wriggling away.
Phillips is working to get back to half guard.
Phillips is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Benn landing punches.
Benn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Phillips is looking to escape.
Phillips is trying desperately to improve position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Phillips in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Phillips is bucking up trying to escape but Benn cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Phillips is wriggling around trying to escape.
Benn landing strikes from the mount and Phillips is in trouble!
Benn in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that DJ Benn will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on DJ Benn's cut.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Phillips throws a leg kick
and Benn counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Benn listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
Benn looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Phillips takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Phillips tries to land a body kick
and Benn counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Benn throws a right hand that Phillips ducks under and follows up with a left that Phillips also avoids with ease.
Phillips tries to clinch but Benn is having none of it.
Phillips goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Phillips walks into a jab.
No joy there for Benn, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Benn chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Phillips can pounce on him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Phillips darts in trying to clinch
and Benn connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Phillips pushes Benn up against the cage in a clinch.

Phillips escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Phillips is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Benn fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Phillips falls off balance throwing a combination

and Benn counters with a takedown into side control.

Benn tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Phillips really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Benn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Benn has hold of Phillips's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Phillips seems comfortable defending it but Benn has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Phillips is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Phillips is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Benn couldn't care less - he's delighted!
