PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jason Riley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rashad Evans (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Riley comes into the arena with Iron Man blaring out of the sound system. Rashad Evans is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rashad Evans!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Elvis Blanc and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Riley gets a takedown into half guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Evans gets full guard.
Evans is looking to stand up but Riley isn't so interested in that idea.
Riley preventing the sweep.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Evans holds on and takes a little breather.
Evans is trying to keep Riley in close.
Riley might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Riley with a flurry of punches that miss.
Evans wants to sweep but no luck.
Riley trying to control the position from guard on top but Evans is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Riley throws the left hand but Evans avoids the punch easily.

Evans turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Evans manages to end up in side control.
Riley is looking to regain half guard here but Evans keeps moving and retains side control.
Riley is working hard here to advance position.
Evans is chipping away with strikes.

Evans goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Riley rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Evans's guard! Nice work there by Riley!
Evans is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Riley trying to control the position from guard on top but Evans is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Evans is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Evans is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Riley throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

We're going to have a standup here because Jason Riley wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Riley tries for a takedown but Evans circles away easily
and Evans counters with a slapping leg kick.
Riley closes the distance but Evans moves to the side
and Evans counters with a head kick. That will keep Riley thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Evans uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Riley.
Evans fails with the takedown
and Riley counters with a nice uppercut.
Evans keeps the fight on the outside.
A head kick by Evans misses
and Evans takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Evans tries to close the distance and clinch but Riley swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Riley connects with a right hand. Evans shakes it off.

Evans clinches with his opponent.

Riley ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Riley no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Evans pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Riley is keeping the position for now.
Riley trying to keep a closed guard but Evans is proving a slippery customer.
Evans is in close to Riley's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Evans slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Riley swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Evans counters with an inside leg kick.
Riley is looking to clinch but Evans is avoiding it.
Riley tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Evans looks for a takedown but Riley sprawls well.
Evans throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Riley's waist but Riley gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Evans off to one side.

Riley gets caught flat footed, as Evans shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Evans would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Riley wants to get back to his feet but Evans is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Evans stops Riley from standing up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Evans engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Riley ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Evans moves away.

Riley rushes Evans and presses him up against the cage.
A frustrated look appears on Evans's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Riley goes for a takedown attempt but Evans pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Evans walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Evans fails with a takedown attempt.
Jason Riley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rashad Evans.
Riley changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Evans tries to avoid it but Riley manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Evans to the ground. Evans escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Nice takedown defense from Evans. No joy for Riley on that attempt.

Evans wants the takedown. Riley is fighting it off but Evans persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Riley's guard against the cage.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Evans sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Riley's guard.

Evans is looking to advance position but Riley won't allow it.

Evans performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Riley trying to control but Evans postures up.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Evans moves into full mount! Riley won't be happy about that!

Evans get's back to his feet.

Evans shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Riley manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Rashad Evans showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Evans is looking to work some ground and pound but Riley has wrist control.

Evans's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Rashad Evans hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Evans fails with an attempt to clinch.
Riley tries to bum rush Evans with a series of wild strikes but Evans uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Evans closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Evans is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Riley has escaped the position, nice work there.

Evans has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Riley tries to clinch but Evans is having none of it.
Evans shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Riley defends it nicely.
Riley shoots in looking for a takedown but Evans manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Riley's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Riley takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

and Riley counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Riley tries to clinch there but Evans circles away.
Riley throws a right and a left that Evans avoids nicely.
Evans showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Riley.
Riley stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Riley wants it to stay on the feet.
Jason Riley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rashad Evans.
Riley lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Evans shoots for a double leg takedown but Riley sprawls well. He's pushed Evans's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Riley throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Evans sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Riley takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Evans lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Evans.
Riley keeps the fight on the outside.

Riley moves into the clinch.
Evans is trying to break the clinch but Riley is controlling him.

Riley tries a knee to the head but Evans blocks it.

Evans manages to break the clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Evans misses with a low kick as Riley jumps back.
A solid leg kick lands there for Riley.
Jason Riley has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rashad Evans is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Evans avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Rashad Evans comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Evans has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
