The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Anthony Taglia and Lou da Vinci.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Friedrich fails with the takedown
and Merritt counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Friedrich is pressing down on Merritt's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Friedrich controls Merritt momentarily but Merritt frees himself.
Merritt won't allow Friedrich to sweep him here.
Merritt wants to control from the top but Friedrich keeps moving.
Friedrich throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Merritt knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Friedrich on the ground.
Friedrich looking to hit a scissor sweep but Merritt is one step ahead there.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Friedrich bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Merritt's guard.
Friedrich has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Friedrich lands a strong strike to the head of Merritt. That's dazed him! Friedrich looking to finish here. Merritt is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Friedrich lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!
