PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rico Reyes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michael Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reyes kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is So Disrespectful. Michael Johnson is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rico Reyes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Michael Johnson!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Reyes closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Johnson to the mat! Johnson manages to get full guard.

Johnson working for a triangle but Reyes defends it easily.

Johnson is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Johnson keeping full guard, as Reyes tries to pass.
Reyes works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Johnson is looking to improve his position.
Johnson works his way to full guard. Good work.

Johnson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Reyes wants to stand but Johnson is controlling his posture from full guard.

Reyes looking to pass the guard.
Reyes is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Johnson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Reyes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Reyes stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Reyes is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Rico Reyes has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
No luck for Johnson with that takedown attempt.
Reyes keeps the fight on the outside.
Johnson misses with a jab, cross combination.
Johnson looks gassed!
Johnson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Johnson wants it to stay on the feet.

Johnson drives through and clinches with Reyes against the cage.

Johnson manages to pull guard.

Reyes got a little sloppy there for a moment and Johnson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Reyes has managed to get both his arms back between Johnson's legs - danger averted.
Reyes is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Johnson is looking for a triangle but Reyes pushes his legs off easily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Reyes trying to control but Johnson is working from the bottom.
Reyes showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Reyes advances to half guard.

Reyes decides to stand and escape the position.
Johnson misses with a series of wild punches.
Reyes with a lazy takedown attempt
and Johnson counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Johnson tries to land a front kick but Reyes steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Reyes throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Johnson's waist but Johnson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Reyes off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rico Reyes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A jab from Johnson misses.

Reyes shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Johnson napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Johnson seems a little lost for a moment, as Reyes dominates the positioning.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Johnson manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Reyes prevents Johnson from improving his position.
Reyes content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rico Reyes dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Johnson fails in his attempt to clinch.
Reyes lands a nice looking body kick.
Reyes shoots for a double leg takedown but Johnson sprawls well. He's pushed Reyes's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Johnson throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Reyes.
Johnson throws a body punch but Reyes moves out of range.
Johnson throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Reyes throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Johnson was covering up waiting for the punch and Reyes finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Johnson is breathing heavily.

Johnson has his foot on Reyes's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Reyes works his way back into a safe position though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Reyes looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Reyes trying to control but Johnson is working from the bottom.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Johnson can do anything to dispel that myth.

Johnson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Reyes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Reyes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Johnson looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Reyes has picked Johnson up and slammed him! Johnson can't keep hold of the triangle and Reyes manages to pass to side control!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Reyes moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Reyes swings around for an armbar but Johnson sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Reyes's guard.

Reyes is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Johnson frees his head nicely. Oh but Reyes has switched to an armbar! Johnson is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
