PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Anderson Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pablo Matos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pablo Matos told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Anderson Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Pablo Matos!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Edson Gomes and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silva moves in looking to clinch but Matos pushes him off.

Matos shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Silva manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Silva wants to sweep here but Matos controlling him for the moment.
Silva is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Silva is looking to take a break and control but Matos is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Silva decides to stand up.

Matos looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Silva really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Silva is trying to control but can't.

Matos is trying to work for a kimura but Silva is defending well.
Silva gets back to full guard.

Matos drops back, looking for a kneebar! Silva looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Silva looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Silva!

Silva stands up and beckons Matos to his feet.
Silva shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Matos counters with a single leg into guard. Silva didn't expect that.

Matos drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Silva manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Matos has Silva in his guard.
Matos wants to get back to his feet but Silva passes into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Silva working over Matos with some ground and pound. Matos looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Matos is trying to stand.

Silva looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Matos wants to stand back up but Silva manages to pass into side control.

Matos wants to get back to his feet but Silva drags him back down.

Silva stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Silva is breathing heavily.
Silva shoots and misses

and Matos counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Silva's guard now.
Matos must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Silva is trying to keep Matos in close.

Matos drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Matos jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Matos trying to control the position from guard on top but Silva is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Matos looking to sit in guard and control but Silva gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Silva pushes down on Matos's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Matos is looking to escape.
Silva wants to pass the guard but Matos is defending well.
Matos wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Matos is staying active underneath Silva, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

A close round but Pablo Matos will probably get the nod.

Matos closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Silva did well to prevent Matos getting side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Matos has gone for a leg lock! Silva slips out almost immediately though and dives into Matos's guard.
Matos wants to stand up but Silva is controlling him.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Matos pushes Silva off and gets back to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Pablo Matos showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Matos is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Matos is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Silva is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Silva has escaped and now he's on top!

Matos really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Silva. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Matos can do anything to dispel that myth.
Silva throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Matos is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Silva is controlling him well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Silva in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Silva wants to stand but Matos has his arm trapped.
Matos is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Anderson Silva has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Pablo Matos is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Matos is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Silva tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

Pablo Matos comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Matos has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
