And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dakota Royer!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Askren misses with a straight left.
Royer dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Askren. That did some damage!
Askren is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Some wild striking there from Askren.
Askren keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Askren misses with a looping right.
A low kick from Royer is predictable there
and Askren counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Royer thinking.
Askren lands with a shot to the body.
Askren looks to land a left hand but Royer moved out of range nicely.
Askren bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Askren throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Royer throws a front kick aimed at Askren's knee but Askren avoids it well.
Royer keeps Askren at a distance using the push kick.
Royer jabs Askren right on the nose. Askren blinks but takes it well.

Askren has closed the distance and engaged Royer in a clinch.
Royer is trying to break the clinch but Askren is controlling him.
Askren keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Royer's efforts to push away.
Askren manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Askren throws a punch but it's blocked by Royer.
A head punch on the inside from Askren fails to land.

Askren swings wildly with an uppercut but Royer uses good head movement to avoid it.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Royer wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Royer breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

and Askren connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Askren misses with a body shot.
A looping hook to the body misses from Askren. Royer does a little dance to reset his feet.
Askren misses with an uppercut.
Askren tries to clinch but Royer moves out of range.
Royer will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Askren checks a leg kick.
Askren uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Royer.

Askren shoots in but Royer avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Askren scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Askren throws a strike but Royer avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Askren looking to sit in guard and control but Royer gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Askren wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Royer is now in half guard.

That was a close round but I would say that John Askren will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

and Royer counters with a good low kick that Askren was not able to check.
Royer lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Askren throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Royer on the side of the head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Royer pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Askren throws a jab when Royer was well out of range.
John Askren seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Askren makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Askren misses with a short punch on the inside.
Askren struggles to land a body shot inside as Royer controls his hands.
Askren is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Royer gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Askren takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Askren tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Royer manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

and Royer counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Askren shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Royer defends it nicely.
Dakota Royer seems to be getting the better of the standup.

and Royer makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Askren really felt that one!
Dakota Royer is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Askren tries to move into range but Royer moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Royer lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Royer feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Askren's calf.
Royer feints and then cracks Askren's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Askren down.
Askren on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Royer. Royer obviously looking to wear him down.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Askren is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.

Dakota Royer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
