PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ronnie Lott (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chad Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Lott might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Get Up. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ronnie Lott!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Chad Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, William Peck and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lott leaves Mendes with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Lott drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Mendes is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Lott pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mendes is keeping the position for now.
Lott wanted to stand there but Mendes had control of the position.

Lott has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Mendes has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Lott can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Mendes is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Lott defends well.
Lott wants to pass the guard but Mendes is keeping the position.

Mendes is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Mendes has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Lott can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Mendes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Lott is aware though and is defending well.
Lott knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mendes on the ground.

Lott is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mendes is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Lott got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mendes has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Lott has managed to get both his arms back between Mendes's legs - danger averted.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Lott decides to stand up, so the ref orders Mendes to his feet.
Lott leaves Mendes with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chad Mendes dominated that round.
That's time! Lott's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.



Lott looking to score a takedown here. Mendes is defending well but Lott drives through and ends up in Mendes's guard.

Mendes working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lott doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lott manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Chad Mendes has got the better of the ground game so far.

Lott thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Mendes has his foot on Lott's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lott works his way back into a safe position though.
Lott forces his way into half guard.
Mendes is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Lott is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mendes defends it well.
Mendes moves into full guard.

Lott is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mendes pushes a forearm under Lott's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Lott is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
