The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Son darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Shimazu tries to roll over but Son keeps him under control.

Shimazu looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Shimazu has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Son is working away from the top position though.

Son is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Shimazu has managed to free his arm - good work.
Son trying to pass the guard but Shimazu defending well.

Son is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Shimazu is just riding it out for now. Son eventually gives up the hold.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Son is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Shimazu sees it coming and defends easily.

Son is pressing down on Shimazu's thigh, looking to free his foot. Shimazu is holding on for now.

Son drops back, looking for a kneebar! Shimazu looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Shimazu looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Shimazu!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shimazu decides to stand back up.
Shimazu shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Son pinned against the cage. Son gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Son swats away the attempt to clinch by Shimazu.
Shimazu fails in his attempt to clinch.

Shimazu fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Son, pushing him back against the cage.

Shimazu stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.

Knees in the clinch landing for Shimazu.

Shimazu pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Shimazu pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Son back to the cage. Shimazu follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Son scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Shimazu is trying to improve his position.

Shimazu sneaks out the side door and pushes Son away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

Shimazu shoots in and gets a takedown into Son's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Son working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Shimazu has passed into half guard!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

William Shimazu dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Son slaps away a takedown attempt from Shimazu, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Son closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Shimazu to the mat! Shimazu manages to get full guard.

Son has gone for a leg lock! Shimazu slips out almost immediately though and dives into Son's guard.
Shimazu has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Son wants to control the position but Shimazu says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Son is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Shimazu scores with a couple of nice shots.

Son looking for submissions off his back.

Son is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Shimazu pulls his head out easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Son is refusing to be controlled, as Shimazu sits in half guard.

Son is looking to improve his position.

Shimazu is working for a submission of some sort.

Shimazu decides to stand up.
Shimazu shoots in for a takedown but Son shows good takedown defense.
Son throws a leg kick
and Shimazu counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Son closes the distance and clinches.

Son gets control of Shimazu's arms and successfully pulls guard. Son will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Shimazu is looking to work some ground and pound but Son has wrist control.

Son has a closed guard, preventing Shimazu from standing up.

Son is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Shimazu rolls with it to try and escape but Son cranks on the arm and Shimazu is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
