PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jack Daniel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ron Tanner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Daniel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ron Tanner!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tanner shoots in and bounces Daniel off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Daniel is on top in guard.
Daniel stopping the sweep attempt from Tanner.
Tanner thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Daniel has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Tanner is proving hard to escape from.

Tanner is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Daniel jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Tanner walks away with a smile on his face. Daniel gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Daniel wants to clinch up but Tanner keeps it at a distance.

Tanner throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Daniel was covering up waiting for the punch and Tanner finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Daniel could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Tanner won't allow Daniel to sweep him here.
Daniel is working hard here to advance position.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Daniel is on top in guard.
Tanner is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Tanner wants to stand up but Daniel is controlling him.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Daniel trying to control the position from guard on top but Tanner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Tanner manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Daniel really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Daniel slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Daniel tries to roll over but Tanner keeps him under control.
Tanner seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Tanner decides to stand up.
Tanner looks gassed!
Daniel is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Daniel misses with a takedown

and Tanner counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Tanner is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Tanner stands and steps away. Daniel gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Daniel doesn't succeed with the takedown
letting Tanner counter with a right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Daniel. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Daniel tries to clinch there but Tanner circles away.
Tanner fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Tanner is looking to clinch but Daniel is avoiding it.

Daniel pushes Tanner up against the cage in a clinch.
Tanner has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Tanner prevents the takedown attempt.

Tanner's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Tanner throws a right and a left that Daniel avoids nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ron Tanner dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Tanner shoots in for a takedown but Daniel shows good takedown defense.
Tanner throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Daniel counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Tanner avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Tanner throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Daniel might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Daniel is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Tanner is looking to stand up but Daniel isn't so interested in that idea.

Daniel gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Jack Daniel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Daniel throws a nice looking combination but Tanner bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Daniel dives in and grabs Tanner's left leg, looking for a takedown. Tanner pushes down on Daniel's head and hops out.

Tanner tries to clinch there but Daniel circles away.
Daniel throws a series of strikes that have Tanner backpedaling.
Tanner scores with a push kick.
Daniel tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Tanner paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Daniel drives through with a takedown into guard.

Daniel trying to control but Tanner is working from the bottom.
Tanner wants to stand and escape but Daniel is having none of it.

Tanner is pulling down on Daniel's head to control his posture.

Tanner wants to stand but Daniel is controlling the position.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Tanner kicks Daniel off and gets to his feet.
Daniel falls off balance throwing a combination

and Tanner counters with a shoot takedown. Daniel fights it but they end up in guard.

Daniel had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Tanner defends it easily.

Tanner got a little sloppy there for a moment and Daniel has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Tanner has managed to get both his arms back between Daniel's legs - danger averted.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tanner tries to stand but Daniel is controlling from the bottom.

Daniel is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Daniel wants a takedown.

Tanner breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

and Tanner counters with a series of strikes. Daniel will be more careful next time no doubt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Daniel. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Tanner slaps away a takedown attempt from Daniel, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Tanner displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Daniel.
Tanner is looking to clinch but Daniel is avoiding it.
Tanner throws a combination that misses

and Daniel counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Tanner is trying to stand.
Tanner throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Daniel is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Tanner sees it coming and defends easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Tanner is trying to control but can't.
Daniel seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Tanner does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Daniel dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Tanner looks to land a combination. Daniel sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Tanner shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Daniel manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Tanner wants to stand but Daniel is controlling his posture from full guard.
Daniel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ron Tanner has got the better of the ground game so far.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Daniel pushes Tanner off and gets back to his feet.
Daniel has his takedown stuffed

and Tanner counters with a nice double leg into side control. Daniel won't be happy with that.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Daniel is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Tanner asserts his dominance and retains side control.
You can see the frustration on Daniel's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Tanner stands up.
Daniel tries a head kick but it misses.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Tanner drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Daniel is trying to control Tanner's posture but Tanner avoids it.
Daniel has one of Tanner's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Daniel struggling a bit here.

Tanner decides to stand back up. Tanner steps back and let's Daniel get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Tanner swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Daniel counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Tanner is looking to control Daniel's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Tanner avoid being mounted?
Tanner is refusing to be controlled, as Daniel sits in half guard.
Tanner wants to get back to his feet.
Daniel working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Tanner's thigh. Tanner counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Daniel has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Tanner is pulling down on Daniel's head. It's preventing any offense from Daniel, at least for the moment.

Daniel won't allow Tanner to get back to his feet.
Daniel is stalling in the full guard.

Jack Daniel has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Tanner shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Daniel but Daniel pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Tanner closes the distance and clinches up with Daniel, looking for a takedown. Tanner pushes Daniel against the cage but Daniel circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Daniel throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ron Tanner comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Tanner has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
