PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jouko Kukkonen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Trevor Woodie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Trevor Woodie struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 187.5lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Jouko Kukkonen has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Trevor Woodie!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice body punch from Woodie.
Woodie ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kukkonen moves away.
Woodie throws a head kick but Kukkonen moves out of range.
Woodie looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kukkonen is fending him off so far but Woodie persists. Nope, Kukkonen circles away and we're back to standing.

and Woodie counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Kukkonen's guard now.

That was a close round but I would say that Jouko Kukkonen will probably get the nod.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Kukkonen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Woodie keeps working.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kukkonen remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

A close second round but Trevor Woodie will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Kukkonen closes the distance and clinches up with Woodie, looking for a takedown. Kukkonen pushes Woodie against the ropes but Woodie circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

and Kukkonen counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Woodie has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Kukkonen is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Woodie.
Kukkonen will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Kukkonen wants to lay and pray for a moment but Woodie keeps working.

Woodie feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Kukkonen cracks Woodie with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Woodie from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Kukkonen connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Woodie some visible discomfort.

Kukkonen is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Woodie is trying to escape and Kukkonen transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Woodie is forced to tap! Nice work there by Kukkonen! Very nice indeed!
