PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Spyde Radic (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Randal Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 9 - 1, fighting out of New York, Spyde Radic!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Randal Stevens!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Russell Pearce and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Radic fails with the takedown

and Stevens decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Radic's guard.
Stevens won't allow Radic to sweep him here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stevens with a flurry of punches that miss.
Radic working a defensive guard here.

Radic is looking for a triangle but Stevens pushes his legs off easily.
Radic bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Stevens's guard.

Stevens is trying to control the position but Radic postures up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stevens keeping full guard, as Radic tries to pass.
Stevens controls Radic momentarily but Radic frees himself.
Stevens is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Stevens is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Stevens wants to sweep here but Radic controlling him for the moment.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Randal Stevens hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Radic fails with the takedown

and Stevens counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Stevens.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Stevens digs a right hand underneath Radic's ribcage. Radic let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Stevens misses with a body punch.
Stevens takes an elbow to the forehead.
Stalling in the clinch from Stevens.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Stevens.
A nice left hand lands by Stevens.
Radic trying to land knees to the body.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Stevens.
Stevens lands with a right to the head.
Stevens managing to block the knees to the body from Radic.
Stevens working aggressively here.
With the fighters up against the cage, Radic throws an elbow but misses.
Stevens manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Radic missing with knees to the body.
Stevens goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Radic tries to work over Stevens's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Radic takes a shot to the head.

Stevens makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Radic.


It looks like Randal Stevens has been cut.
Radic blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

Radic breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Stevens swings for the body but Radic moves out of range.
Stevens throws a big shot that misses.
Radic walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Stevens checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Radic gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stevens to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Radic looking to hit a scissor sweep but Stevens is one step ahead there.

Radic escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Stevens gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Radic wants to get back to his feet but Stevens is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Radic is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Stevens is looking to work some ground and pound but Radic has wrist control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Radic shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Stevens connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Radic gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Stevens counters by moving into the clinch.
Stevens has Radic pressed against the cage.
The crowd are getting on Stevens's back here. They're not happy about his lack of aggression in the clinch.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stevens scores with a body shot.
Spyde Radic seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Radic is looking to land body kicks.
Stevens misses with a right hand
and Radic finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Stevens tries to score a power double leg takedown but Radic sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Stevens somewhat.

and Stevens counters with a nice double leg into side control. Radic won't be happy with that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Spyde Radic. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Radic takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Stevens working away.
Radic gets back to half guard.
Radic blocking the ground and pound attempt from Stevens.
Radic wants to improve his position but Stevens is controlling well.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Stevens in particular looking to stall.

Radic wants to get back to full guard but Stevens has mounted him!

Stevens tries to control but Radic wriggling away.
Stevens landing strikes from the mount and Radic is in trouble!
Radic is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Radic is looking to improve his position but Stevens isn't that keen on the idea.

Radic manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Radic is trying to get back to full guard.
Radic is trying to control but can't.
Radic won't allow Stevens to pass to mount.
Stevens is just content to waste time from the top position. Radic takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Randal Stevens showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Radic with a lazy takedown attempt

and Stevens counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Radic's guard now.

Randal Stevens has got the better of the ground game so far.

Radic is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Stevens defends well.

Stevens lands a couple of digs.
Radic controls Stevens momentarily but Stevens frees himself.
Stevens must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Stevens works over Radic with some ground and pound from guard.
Stevens trying to control the position from guard on top but Radic is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Stevens stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Radic swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Radic avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Stevens looking to sit in guard and control but Radic gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Radic wants to stand but Stevens is controlling his posture from full guard.
Spyde Radic has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Radic drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Radic jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Radic has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Stevens is proving hard to escape from.
Radic wants to pass the guard but Stevens is keeping the position.
Radic will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Radic won't allow Stevens to sweep him here.
Stevens preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Radic slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Stevens is looking for a sweep.

Radic wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Stevens, who protects the arm well.
Stevens manages to work his way to half guard, despite Radic's best efforts.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Stevens is pressing down on Radic's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Stevens lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Radic!
Radic regains half guard.
Radic is trying to control but can't.
Radic works his way to full guard. Good work.

And that's the end of the fight!
Randal Stevens comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Stevens winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
