Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between John Dess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Vincent Smyth (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smyth has chosen RZA - Fatal as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smyth takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Dess gets off balance looking for a body kick
and Dess takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
A swing and a miss from Dess.
Dess throws a leg kick but Smyth sees it coming and checks it nicely.

Dess fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Smyth has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

Dess keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Dess missing with a left hand there. Smyth was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

and Smyth makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
John Dess seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smyth is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Smyth misses with a shot to the body
and Dess makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Dess uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Smyth.
John Dess is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Dess feints and then cracks Smyth's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Smyth down.

Smyth shoots for a double leg takedown but Dess sprawls well. He's pushed Smyth's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Dess wants to land a leg kick but Smyth is out of range.

Dess rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Smyth makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

and Smyth counters with a single leg into guard. Dess didn't expect that.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Smyth accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Dess working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Smyth.
Dess can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smyth controls the pace.
Dess looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Smyth postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smyth throws an elbow but Dess slips to the side and avoids it well.
Dess is trying to control Smyth's posture but Smyth avoids it.

Dess wants to control but Smyth postures up.

Smyth wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Dess, who protects the arm well.
Smyth has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Dess parries the strikes from Smyth easily there. Smyth is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Dess to escape.
Smyth postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Dess manages to work his way to half guard, despite Smyth's best efforts.

Smyth wants to control but Dess is keeping him busy.
Smyth landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Dess is trying to get back to full guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Dess blocking the ground and pound attempt from Smyth.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smyth with the ground and pound but Dess uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Smyth prevents Dess from getting back to his feet.

Smyth wants to control from the top but Dess keeps moving.
Smyth in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Smyth passes Dess's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Smyth looks to land a strike but Dess avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

Vincent Smyth showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

and Smyth counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Dess misses with a low kick.
Dess misses with a kick to the body.
Smyth misses with a double jab
and Dess counters with a nice leg kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smyth looks to throw the jab but Dess is out of range.
Dess throws a head kick that half lands.

Dess throws a lazy uppercut
and Smyth counters with a stiff right hand.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Dess.
Smyth misses with a leg kick.
Good leg kick by Dess there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Smyth shoots in for a takedown but Dess shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Dess misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Smyth looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Dess is fending him off so far but Smyth persists. Nope, Dess circles away and we're back to standing.

Dess misses with a body shot
and Smyth counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Smyth displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Dess throws out the jab.
Smyth closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Smyth throws a hook but Dess blocks it.
Dess throws a sloppy head kick and Smyth moves out of range easily.
Good shot there by Dess.
Dess lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

and Smyth counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Dess misses with a kick to the body
and Smyth counters with a three punch combo that has Dess backing up. Dess nods at Smyth to acknowledge the strikes.
Nice uppercut there from Smyth.
Smyth throws a lazy head kick
enabling Dess to counter with a crisp jab.
Smyth misses with a hook to the body
and Dess counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Smyth takes a head kick and shrugs it off.


Smyth is rocked!

Dess lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Smyth is still on wobbly legs! Can Dess finish him?
Smyth takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Dess fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Smyth looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
A nice leg kick lands there from Dess.
Smyth is holding his hands too far apart here. Dess throws a hard, straight punch right down the pipe and BOOM! Smyth is out! That punch landed square on the jaw - what a shot!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:35 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). John Dess!
