PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kal Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Ricard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ricard has chosen Frank The Tank as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Kal Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Frank Ricard!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Ricard throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Ricard wants to clinch.
Ricard throws a leg kick
and Penn counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Ricard misses with a kick to the body.
Ricard throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Penn counters by clinching up.
Ricard has Penn pushed against the cage.

Penn breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
A decent looking cross lands there for Penn.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ricard throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.


It looks like Kal Penn has been cut.
Penn scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Ricard doesn't seem bothered though.
Ricard looks gassed!
Ricard drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.


It looks like Frank Ricard has been cut.
Ricard on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Penn fails with an attempt to clinch.
Penn misses with a few strikes there.

Penn drops Ricard with a big left hand and mounts him. Ricard is in big trouble!


Ricard is rocked!
Ricard is looking to get to half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Ricard squirming around on the bottom, looking to escape.
Penn sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Kal Penn.
Penn doesn't manage to clinch there - Ricard circles away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Ricard will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Penn connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Penn fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Ricard looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Penn tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Ricard paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Penn throws a big overhand right that connects, sending Ricard tumbling to the canvas!
Ricard is still in real trouble! Can Penn finish him?
Penn controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Ricard seems to have recovered his senses.
Penn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Ricard swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Penn sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Ricard's guard.
Penn trying to control the pace.
Ricard misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Penn throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn prevents Ricard from standing back up.
Penn drops an elbow to the side of Ricard's head.
Ricard avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Penn.
Ricard won't allow Penn to pass to mount.
Ricard is looking for a sweep. Penn is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Penn blocks the strikes from Ricard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Penn is taking a breather. Ricard says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Ricard tries to get to full guard but Penn has control of the leg.
Penn missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Penn misses with a head shot. Ricard uses the momentum to regain guard.
Ricard being controlled here, momentarily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penn wants to control from the top but Ricard keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Kal Penn just wasn't active enough.
Penn looks for the body kick but Ricard saw that one coming.
Ricard wants to clinch up but Penn keeps it at a distance.

Penn moves into range and clinches up with Ricard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ricard wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Ricard is pushing Penn up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
A head punch on the inside from Penn fails to land.
Ricard changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Penn fights it off and pushes away nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kal Penn dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Penn dodges the punch combination from Ricard.
Penn tries to clinch but Ricard moves out of range.
Kal Penn is winning the standup battle so far.
Ricard fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Ricard closes the distance and clinches up with Penn, looking for a takedown. Ricard pushes Penn against the cage but Penn circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Penn takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
A jab lands there for Penn.
Penn tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Ricard manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Penn uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Ricard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Ricard tries to clinch up.
Ricard lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Penn circles away quickly and effectively.
Frank Ricard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ricard looks up at the clock. Bad move! Penn lands a right hand from hell, dropping Ricard. Penn pounces and finishes the fight with a flurry of punches and elbows.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Kal Penn!
