PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Xander Arapeta (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Sully (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Arapeta comes to the cage accompanied by The Sound by Switchfoot. Sully is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by I See You. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Xander Arapeta!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Sully!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Donatello Bradman and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sully jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Arapeta throws a low kick but it's checked well by Sully.
Arapeta throws a wild body kick that Sully sees coming a mile off.
A combination from Sully does no damage.
Sully looks for a takedown but Arapeta sprawls well.
Sully throws a left and a right that both miss
and Arapeta counters with a big head kick but Sully shrugs it off.
Sully swings widly with a right hand
and Arapeta counters with a body kick that stops Sully in his tracks momentarily.
Arapeta defending well as Sully loads up on a big left hand.
Sully looks to score with a jab to the body but Arapeta is just out of range.
Arapeta moves out of range as Sully strikes.
Sully misses with an uppercut
and Arapeta counters with a nice body kick.
Sully misses with a body punch
and Arapeta finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
A decent looking cross lands there for Arapeta.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sully throws a predictable looking body shot
and Arapeta counters with a head kick. That will keep Sully thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
Arapeta scores with a jab. Sully acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Sully misses with a double jab.

and Arapeta counters with a slapping leg kick.

Sully rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Arapeta moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Sully ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Arapeta moves away.

Arapeta changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Xander Arapeta is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Sully slips a straight right by Arapeta.

Sully scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Sully is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Arapeta doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Sully.

Arapeta is trying to stand.

Sully missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Sully throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Arapeta wants to control but Sully is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Sully wants to pass the guard but Arapeta is defending well.
Sully passes to side control.
You can see the frustration on Arapeta's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Arapeta manages to get back to half guard.

Sully is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Arapeta doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Sully.
Sully has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Sully is pressing down on Arapeta's thigh, looking to free his foot. Arapeta is holding on for now.
Sully thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Arapeta's head.
Arapeta is trying to control but Sully manages to pass to mount!

Sully has control of Arapeta's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Arapeta regains control of the situation pretty easily.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Sully moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Arapeta has worked his arm free - good work by Arapeta!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sully tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Arapeta is not content to let Sully control the position.
Sully looking to control but instead Arapeta has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Arapeta wants to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Xander Arapeta dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Sully throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Arapeta throws a low kick but Sully moves out of range easily.
Arapeta looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Arapeta finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Sully throws a lazy uppercut
and Arapeta counters with a slapping leg kick.
Sully closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Sully keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Sully throws a right hand that Arapeta ducks under and follows up with a left that Arapeta also avoids with ease.
Sully scores with a jab to the head.
Xander Arapeta is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Arapeta misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Sully.
Arapeta lands a nice leg kick that just misses Sully's sensitive parts.
Arapeta throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Arapeta leaves Sully with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Sully lands a jab.
Arapeta motions for Sully to come forward. Arapeta throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Arapeta steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Sully.

Arapeta throws the kick towards the body but Sully avoids it.

and Arapeta counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Sully throws a body punch but Arapeta moves out of range.

and Arapeta finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Sully thows a body shot but no joy.
Sully fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Arapeta throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

and Arapeta counters with a good, hard body kick but Sully shrugs it off.
Arapeta wants to slow Sully down by chopping away at his legs.
Sully looks to land a combination but Arapeta avoids it well.

Sully throws a shot from downtown. Arapeta moves away and avoids it.
Sully swings widly with a right hand
and Arapeta counters with a good low kick that Sully was not able to check.
Arapeta avoids a punch combination nicely.
Sully misses with a wild combination.
Sully falls off balance throwing a combination
and Arapeta finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.

and Sully decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Arapeta's guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Arapeta wants to stand but Sully is controlling the position.
Sully thows a big elbow that misses.
Sully stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Arapeta swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Sully showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sully throws a strike but Arapeta rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Arapeta is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Sully is looking for a triangle but Arapeta pushes his legs off easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Sully is looking to sweep but instead, Arapeta has passed into half guard.
Sully is trying to get back to full guard.
Sully makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Sully.

Sully isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Arapeta stacks Sully on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Arapeta!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Sully is trying to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Xander Arapeta will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Sully moves out of range as Arapeta throws a body kick.

Arapeta gets caught flat footed, as Sully shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Arapeta manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sully manages to get himself to full guard.

Arapeta avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Sully is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Arapeta is aware though and is defending well.
Arapeta engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Sully has his foot on Arapeta's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Arapeta works his way back into a safe position though.
Arapeta has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Arapeta decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Sully steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Arapeta.

Sully moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Jake Sully seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sully throws a hook but Arapeta avoids it easily.

Arapeta misses with a kick to the body

and Sully counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Sully wants to free his trapped foot but Arapeta is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Sully is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Arapeta keeping hold of Sully's head, controlling as best he can.

Sully seems to be looking for submissions.
Arapeta tries to kick Sully off but Sully keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Sully seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Arapeta does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sully wants to work for an arm triangle but Arapeta is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Sully thows a huge punch but Arapeta dodges it nicely.
Arapeta is looking to control Sully's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Arapeta avoid being mounted?

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Sully is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Sully is stalling here. Arapeta is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Sully seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Arapeta has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Sully is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Arapeta's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Jake Sully has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jake Sully has got the better of the ground game so far.
Sully is trying to control but can't.

Jake Sully comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Arapeta has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
