PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ja Masterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kova Luu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Luu has chosen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buElOjx2T7w as his entrance music. Kova Luu told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Masterson misses with a combination
and Luu counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Masterson throws a one two combo.

It looks like Kova Luu has been cut.
Luu throws a right and a left that both miss.

Luu forces Masterson back against the cage and clinches.
Luu is trying to break the clinch but Masterson has him pressed against the cage.

Masterson pulls Luu into guard.
Luu throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Masterson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Masterson is pulling down on Luu's head to control his posture.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Ja Masterson.

Luu closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Masterson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Luu wants to control from the top but Masterson keeps moving.

Luu throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Masterson is looking for a sweep. Luu is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Luu is looking to take a break and control but Masterson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Masterson has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Masterson slips a jab and a cross from Luu.
Masterson feints a jab promting Luu to slip. Masterson then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Luu slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

and Luu counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Masterson tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Luu smiles and moves away.
Luu takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Masterson lands a big head kick that sends Luu tumbling to the mat! Masterson takes a step backwards and waves Luu back to his feet - he wants the finish!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

and Luu counters with a single leg into guard. Masterson didn't expect that.

That has opened up Kova Luu's cut even more.
Luu tries to free his leg and advance position but Masterson is retaining full guard.
Masterson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Luu is one step ahead there.

Luu takes one on the chin but seems OK.

and Luu counters with a one-two to the body.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Luu shoots in but Masterson avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Luu bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Luu is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Masterson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Luu swings around for an armbar but Masterson sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Luu's guard.

Masterson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Masterson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Masterson wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Luu, who protects the arm well.
Luu is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Luu cracks Masterson with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Luu is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Masterson throws a lazy head kick

and Luu moves into the clinch.
Masterson jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Luu walks away with a smile on his face. Masterson gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Luu lands a nice hook to Masterson's body. Masterson takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Luu is looking to clinch but Masterson is avoiding it.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Luu.
Ja Masterson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Masterson swats away the attempt to clinch by Luu.
Luu tries to clinch up but Masterson circles away and keeps his distance.
Masterson throws a lazy uppercut

and Luu counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Luu.
Luu really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Masterson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Masterson seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Luu throws and elbow that misses. Masterson uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Luu's guard. Nice move by Masterson!

Masterson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Luu, up you get!

Luu scores with the left hand. Masterson knows he should have avoided that one.

and Luu counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Luu fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

and Masterson cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

The cut above Kova Luu's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
Ja Masterson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kova Luu.
Luu takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Masterson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

and Luu holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Masterson jumps into guard, dragging Luu to the mat.

Luu drops back, looking for a kneebar! Masterson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Masterson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Masterson!

Masterson has hold of Luu's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Luu seems comfortable defending it but Masterson has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Luu is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Luu is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Masterson couldn't care less - he's delighted!
