PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jeremy Durden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Drew Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jeremy Durden!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Drew Diaz!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Dillan Fox and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Durden fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Diaz to the ground. Durden is now in Diaz's guard.
Durden won't allow Diaz to sweep him here.
Diaz wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Diaz working a defensive guard here.
Diaz can't keep his opponent in guard - Durden advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Durden is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Diaz is looking for a sweep. Durden is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Durden is nestled in close to Diaz, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Durden stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Diaz swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Durden wants to control from the top but Diaz keeps moving.
Durden throws a big right hand that misses.

Durden trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Durden knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Diaz on the ground.
Durden has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Durden lands a nice short elbow.
Durden is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Durden clinches with his opponent.
Diaz lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Diaz obliges.
Durden tries to stall but Diaz uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Durden tries to land a knee to the head but misses.

Diaz breaks from the clinch.
Durden walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Durden closes the distance and clinches.
Durden lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Durden throws an elbow but it misses.
Diaz digs a right hand underneath Durden's ribcage. Durden let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Diaz lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Diaz wants a takedown but no success here.
Durden tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Diaz using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.
Durden misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Diaz.
Durden creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

Diaz breaks from the clinch.
Diaz shoots in but no luck this time.
Diaz fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Jeremy Durden has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Drew Diaz.

Durden darts in and clinches Diaz up against the ropes.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Diaz breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Diaz looks to score with a jab to the body but Durden is just out of range.

Diaz looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Diaz lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Durden!
Durden is squirming around, avoiding Diaz's attempts to control the action.

Diaz tries to control but Durden wriggling away.
Durden wants to control but Diaz is having none of it.
Durden is looking to get to half guard.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Diaz trying to control but Durden is having none of it.
Durden in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Drew Diaz showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Durden misses with a double jab

and Diaz holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Good body shot from Durden.
Durden lands a nice elbow from the clinch.

Diaz breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Durden moves into the clinch.
Diaz goes for a takedown attempt but Durden pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Durden clinches up against the ropes.
Durden tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Durden tries to pull guard but Diaz won't allow it.

Durden manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Diaz advances position into side control!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Diaz tries to advance to mount but can't.

Diaz works to advance to full mount. Durden defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Poor strikes thrown by Diaz there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Durden wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Diaz.

Durden holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Diaz tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Diaz throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Diaz has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Diaz is landing with some decent strikes but Durden is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Diaz unloads with some shots from mount but Durden bucks and avoids them well.
Diaz wants to control the pace but Durden is squirming around nicely.
Diaz is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Durden wants to hold on but Diaz pushes him away.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Diaz wants to control the pace but Durden is squirming around nicely.

And that's the end of the fight!
Drew Diaz comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Diaz has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
