PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Harry Villegas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Timber Lake (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Villegas comes to the cage accompanied by War is my destiny. Timber Lake will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Harry Villegas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Timber Lake!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Trevor Gratis and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big left from Lake misses.
Villegas lands a head shot.
Villegas misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Lake.
Lake throws a left and a right that both miss

and Villegas counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Villegas throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Lake kicks Villegas off and gets back to his feet.
Villegas ducks under a wild hook from Lake.
Lake throws a right hand that misses
and Villegas counters with a left to the body.
Lake connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Villegas momentarily.
Villegas fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Villegas wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
A nice inside leg kick there by Villegas. That's going to slow Lake down.
Timber Lake seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Villegas on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Sloppy strikes from Lake. Those never looked like landing.
Lake misses with a combination
and Villegas makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Lake throws a poor cross that misses

so Villegas counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Villegas sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Lake's guard.
Lake really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Villegas. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Lake is refusing to be controlled, as Villegas sits in half guard.

Lake is defending against the submission attempts here by Villegas.

Lake moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Villegas drops back, looking for a kneebar! Lake looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Lake looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Lake!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lake wants to lay and pray for a moment but Villegas keeps working.

Villegas is looking to regain half guard here but Lake keeps moving and retains side control.

Lake moves into full mount! Villegas won't be happy about that!
Lake trying to control but he's not successful this time.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Villegas keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Villegas manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Villegas is looking for a sweep. Lake is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Villegas is refusing to be controlled, as Lake sits in half guard.

Lake throws a lazy uppercut

and Villegas counters with a single leg into guard. Lake didn't expect that.
Lake pulls Villegas in close to prevent any damage.
Villegas postures up in Lake's guard and throws a big left but Lake blocks it.
Villegas trying to control but Lake is working from the bottom.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Lake throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Villegas counters with a takedown into side control.
Lake tries to buck Villegas off but Villegas is having none of it.
Lake parries the strikes from Villegas easily there. Villegas is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Lake to escape.

Lake takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Harry Villegas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Lake can't do much from the bottom here.
Lake is looking for a sweep.

Villegas seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Lake does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Villegas cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Lake in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Villegas throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Villegas clinches up with Lake and pushes him back against the cage.
Lake wants to break the clinch but can't.
Villegas manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Villegas seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.
Lake is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Villegas pulls him back up using the underhooks.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lake has Villegas pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Lake pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Villegas tumbling to the mat - Lake dives into Villegas's guard.
Villegas has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Timber Lake has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
