PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Greg Flang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick Szyslak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Flang comes to the ring accompanied by Tenacious D - Fuck Her Gently. The crowd seem to be enjoying Szyslak's choice of entrance music: Metallica-Enter Sandman. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Greg Flang!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 11 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Nick Szyslak!
The judges for this bout are James Atkins, James Glass and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Szyslak dips to his left and cracks Flang with an uppercut!
Flang scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Szyslak tries to clinch but Flang is having none of it.

Flang looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Szyslak is defending against the submission attempts here by Flang.
Flang thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Szyslak's head.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Szyslak is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Flang seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Szyslak does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Flang trying to pass the guard but Szyslak defending well.
Flang is working hard here to advance position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Flang throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Szyslak throws a lazy head kick
and Flang counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Szyslak misses with a head kick.
Nick Szyslak is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A nice leg kick lands there from Szyslak.
Nice uppercut there from Szyslak.
Flang dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Szyslak misses with a right hand
and Flang counters with a straight right hand.
Flang thows a body shot but no joy.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Flang moves out of range of the body kick.
Szyslak throws a poor cross that misses
and Flang connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Flang checks a leg kick.
Szyslak wants to slow Flang down by chopping away at his legs.

Szyslak moves into range and clinches up with Flang.
A right hook to the body lands for Flang.
Szyslak misses with the head strike.
Szyslak misses with a hook from the clinch.
Szyslak doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Szyslak blocks an uppercut.
Flang blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Flang is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the ropes.
Flang blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Szyslak tries a body shot but Flang blocks it.

Szyslak breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Szyslak misses with a right hand
and Flang counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Szyslak tries to close the distance and clinch up but Flang swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Flang throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Szyslak tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Flang is in Szyslak's guard.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Flang wants to control from the top but Szyslak keeps moving.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Greg Flang dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!



A momentary lapse in concentration from Szyslak enables Flang to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Szyslak manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Flangis looking to pass into half guard but Szyslak pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Szyslak is in guard.
Flang is trying to control the position but Szyslak postures up.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Szyslak won't allow Flang to sweep him here.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Greg Flang wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Flang takes a swing at Szyslak's ribcage but misses.
Flang misses with a body shot
and Szyslak counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Szyslak swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Szyslak tries to close the distance and clinch but Flang swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Flang gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Szyslak.


It looks like Greg Flang has been cut.
Szyslak cracks Flang with an open hand slap.
Flang fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Szyslak manages to avoid it.
Szyslak throws a head kick but Flang moves out of range.
Szyslak rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Flang counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Szyslak tries to close the distance and clinch up against the ropes but Flang paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Flang misses with a jab to the body
and Szyslak counters with a left and a right that stings Flang.
Szyslak throws a jab but it's blocked by Flang.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Szyslak throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Flang uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Szyslak.
Szyslak lands an overhand right.
Szyslak scores with a leg kick.
Flang defending well as Szyslak loads up on a big left hand.
Szyslak throws a hook to the side of Flang's head but Flang sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Szyslak slips a jab from Flang.
Flang has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Flang there as he acknowledges the shot.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Szyslak misses with a hook

and Flang counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Szyslak is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Flang dives into side control.
Szyslak wants to get back to his feet but Flang drags him back down.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Szyslak is not content to let Flang control the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Flang tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Flang swings around for an armbar but Szyslak sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Flang's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nick Szyslak showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Greg Flang's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Szyslak closes the distance and lands a one-two.

Szyslak throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
A clash of legs there as Flang blocks the low kick.
Szyslak lands a nice looking body shot.
Szyslak throws a sloppy head kick and Flang moves out of range easily.
Flang lands a jab to Szyslak's midsection.
Szyslak throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Nick Szyslak seems to be getting the better of the standup.

A looping hook to the body misses from Flang. Szyslak does a little dance to reset his feet.
Flang dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Flang darts in and out, connecting with a jab.

Flang is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Szyslak's half guard.
Flang wants to free his trapped foot but Szyslak is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Flang uses his free foot to push down on Szyslak's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Szyslak.

Flang moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Szyslak has worked his arm free - good work by Szyslak!

Flang tries to advance to mount but Szyslak instead regains half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Flang trying to mount his opponent but Szyslak defends it.

Flang wants to work for an arm triangle but Szyslak is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Greg Flang.
I think Flang has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
