PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Turk Ransel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Cuevas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ransel comes to the cage accompanied by The Pug Uglies- Street Rule. The crowd seem to be enjoying Cuevas's choice of entrance music: Leave Us Alone/ Dead By Gun. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Turk Ransel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tony Cuevas!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Steve Smith and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cuevas fails with a takedown attempt.
Cuevas circles away from the clinch attempt

and Cuevas counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Ransel!
Ransel takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Cuevas throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Ransel is working to get back to half guard.
Ransel tries to hold on but Cuevas pushes him away.
Ransel is looking to improve his position but Cuevas isn't that keen on the idea.

Cuevas is just content to waste time from the top position. Ransel takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Cuevas working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Cuevas looking to sit in guard and control but Ransel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Ransel wants to stand up but Cuevas is controlling the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Ransel loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Ransel is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Cuevas reverses the position - he's now on top in Ransel's guard.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Ransel shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Ransel seems to be working for a kimura but Cuevas defends the submission attempt.

Ransel is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Cuevas is just riding it out for now. Ransel eventually gives up the hold.

Ransel is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Ransel not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Ransel is trying to work for a kimura but Cuevas is defending well.
Ransel thows a huge punch but Cuevas dodges it nicely.

Ransel passes to side control.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cuevas can do anything to dispel that myth.

Ransel stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Ransel fails to land with a series of punches.
Cuevas ducks under a wild hook from Ransel.
Cuevas shoots in for a takedown but Ransel shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

and Cuevas counters with a shoot takedown. Ransel fights it but they end up in guard.
Ransel has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Cuevas looking to sit in guard and control but Ransel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Ransel postures up in Cuevas's guard and throws a big left but Cuevas blocks it.

Ransel wants to stand but Cuevas is controlling his posture from full guard.
Ransel postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Ransel has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Cuevas is proving hard to escape from.

Tony Cuevas has got the better of the ground game so far.

Cuevas working for a triangle but Ransel defends it easily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Ransel gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Ransel connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.


It looks like Tony Cuevas has been cut.
Cuevas gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Ransel counters with a left to the body.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cuevas swats away the attempt to clinch by Ransel.

Cuevas moves into the clinch successfully.
Ransel has Cuevas pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Cuevas manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Turk Ransel dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Tony Cuevas's cut.
That's time! Ransel's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Cuevas tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
A decent looking cross lands there for Ransel.
Turk Ransel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Ransel throws a head kick but Cuevas moves out of range.
The fight stays on the outside here - Ransel looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
A lazy left from Ransel finds it's target.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Cuevas leaves Ransel with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Ransel fails with an attempt to clinch.
Ransel missing with a left hand there. Cuevas was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Ransel misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Cuevas takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Ransel tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Cuevas paws at him with a jab and circles away.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ransel throws an off balance right hand

and Cuevas counters with a shoot takedown. Ransel fights it but they end up in guard.
Ransel keeping moving, preventing Cuevas from controlling successfully.
Ransel manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Ransel is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Cuevas is forced to tap! Great finish!
