PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Calico James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alistair Porttikongi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). James comes into the arena with Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf blaring out of the sound system. Alistair Porttikongi will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 7 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Calico James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alistair Porttikongi!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Wesley Smith and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James misses with a combination
and Porttikongi counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
James shoots in for a takedown but Porttikongi shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
James thuds his right hand into Porttikongi's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
James misses with a wild body shot.
Porttikongi avoids the body shot from James.
James circles away from the clinch attempt.
James throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

That's one minute gone in the round.
James lands a nice shot that snaps Porttikongi's head back.
Porttikongi connects with the punch.
James jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
James's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and James duly obliges.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Porttikongi tries to clinch up but James circles away and keeps his distance.
James misses with a series of wild punches.

James gets a takedown into half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
James is trying to control the action in half guard but Porttikongi is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
James is nestled in close to Porttikongi, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
James not doing much here.
James stalling away here and it's allowed Porttikongi to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
James tries to free his leg and advance position but Porttikongi is retaining full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James throws a big right hand that misses.
James trying to control but Porttikongi is working from the bottom.
James looking to sit in guard and control but Porttikongi gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
James bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Porttikongi's guard.
James trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

James trying to control the position from guard on top but Porttikongi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
James is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Porttikongi is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Porttikongi is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Porttikongi avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
James sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Porttikongi's guard.
Porttikongi is staying active underneath James, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

James is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Porttikongi has managed to free his arm - good work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
James not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Calico James dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Porttikongi with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling James to score with a decent uppercut.
A slow jab from James misses its intended target.
James connects with a nice looking jab.
James looks to score with a jab to the body but Porttikongi is just out of range.
James wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Porttikongi slips a jab and a cross from James.
Alistair Porttikongi is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
James misses with a takedown attempt - Porttikongi sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Porttikongi walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

James misses with an uppercut. Porttikongi saw that one coming.
Porttikongi misses with a double jab
and James cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
James sizes up Porttikongi with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Porttikongi throws a hook but James blocks it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
James tries to bum rush Porttikongi with a series of wild strikes but Porttikongi uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
James throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

James gets a takedown into half guard.
James working the head and body with strikes.
James is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Porttikongi won't allow James to pass to mount.
Porttikongi is looking to improve his position.
James wants to lay and pray for a moment but Porttikongi keeps working.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James trying to control from Porttikongi's half guard. Porttikongi has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
James might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Porttikongi can't keep his opponent in guard - James advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
James seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Porttikongi does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
James perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

James is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Porttikongi sees it coming and defends easily.
James moves nicely into side control.
Porttikongi parries the strikes from James easily there. James is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Porttikongi to escape.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Porttikongi is trying to escape the position but James is controlling the position.
Porttikongi dodges the ground and pound from James.
James trying to control the action but Porttikongi is working from the bottom.
James has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
James in side control, just content to control the action for now.
The ground and pound from James seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Porttikongi really doesn't want to stay on the ground with James. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
James trying to control the action but Porttikongi is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Calico James dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Porttikongi tries to clinch there but James circles away.
James connects with a nice looking jab.
Porttikongi is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
James tests Porttikongi's chin there with a solid looking shot.

James avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Calico James seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
James bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
James shoots in looking for a takedown. Porttikongi tries to sprawl out of it but James keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Porttikongi manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Porttikongi takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Calico James is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Porttikongi looks to clinch
and James cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
James misses with a right hand
and Porttikongi counters with a nice uppercut.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
James misses with a jab to the body

and Porttikongi counters with a leg kick then a big left hand that sends James down! Porttikongi is looking to finish but James is intelligently defending himself.


James is rocked!
Porttikongi trying to control but James is working from the bottom.
James is trying to control the position but Porttikongi postures up.

James looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

James is looking for a triangle but Porttikongi pushes his legs off easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
James wants to sweep here but Porttikongi controlling him for the moment.

James has his foot on Porttikongi's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Porttikongi works his way back into a safe position though.
Porttikongi trying to control but James is working from the bottom.
James is trying to control the position from the bottom.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as James holds on and takes a little breather.

James is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
James looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Porttikongi pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. James is keeping the position for now.
Porttikongi preventing the sweep.
Porttikongi must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
James is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Alistair Porttikongi.
Well James has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
