PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ron James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gregor Mendel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mendel has chosen Lambada as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ron James!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 1, fighting out of New York, Gregor Mendel!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, John Roberts and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
James takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

James darts in and clinches Mendel up against the cage.
The referee is keeping an eye on James - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Mendel is trying to work for a single leg takedown but James pulls him back up using the underhooks.

James is fighting off a takedown attempt but Mendel is just too persistent for him and manages to trip James to the mat. James regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
James is trying to keep Mendel in close.

Mendel drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but James manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Mendel has James in his guard.

James avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
James scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
James has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Mendel utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

That was a close round but I would say that Ron James will probably get the nod.

It looks like Gregor Mendel has been cut.
James is pressed up against the cage. Mendel has hold of a leg and is looking to drag James down to the mat. James avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

James scores with a hook to the body. Mendel takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
James throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mendel steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from James. That one must have hurt.

and James counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
James lunges at Mendel with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Mendel's hand.

Mendel takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
James paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

James gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Mendel fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for James, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
