PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Byron Northview (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gunnar Owens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Byron Northview!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gunnar Owens!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Ian Loll and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Northview will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Owens misses with a jab, cross combination.
Owens tries for a takedown but Northview circles away easily

and Northview counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Northview.
Northview controlling from the top position.
Owens wants to sweep but no luck.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Northview avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Northview wants to stand but Owens is controlling his posture from full guard.

Northview has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Northview wants to stand but Owens has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Owens working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Northview doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Northview manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Owens is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Owens working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Northview doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Northview manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Owens lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Northview!
Poor strikes thrown by Owens there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Owens can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Northview is looking to escape.

Owens is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Northview can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Owens goes for an armbar but Northview turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Northview.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Northview is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Owens is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Owens is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Northview is in close to Owens's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Northview stands up over Owens, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Owens has his foot on Northview's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Northview works his way back into a safe position though.
Owens trying to keep a closed guard but Northview is proving a slippery customer.
Northview would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Owens is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Northview not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Byron Northview dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Owens throws a series of strikes that have Northview backpedaling.

Owens has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Northview can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Northview gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Owens scores with a shot to the body.

Owens shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Northview is trying to defend but Owens finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Owens is looking for a kimura but Northview is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Owens to get the leverage.

Owens seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Northview is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
