PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brad Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alez Calypse (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nelson kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Black Flood Diesel - Lost Cause. Calypse has chosen Prodigy - Spitfire as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of London, Brad Nelson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Alez Calypse!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, William Gold and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Calypse moves into the clinch.

Nelson pulls guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Calypse trying to control but Nelson is working from the bottom.

Nelson is looking for a triangle but Calypse pushes his legs off easily.

Calypse avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Nelson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Calypse trying to control the position from guard on top but Nelson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Calypse with a flurry of punches that miss.
Calypse looking to pass the guard.

Nelson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Calypse doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Calypse manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Calypse sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Nelson's guard.
Nelson is pressing down on Calypse's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Calypse wants to control from the top but Nelson keeps moving.

Nelson is looking for a triangle but Calypse pushes his legs off easily.

Nelson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Calypse doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Calypse manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Calypse stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Nelson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Nelson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Calypse drops back, looking for a kneebar! Nelson looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Nelson looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Nelson!
Calypse stops Nelson from passing to mount.

Calypse is looking to regain half guard here but Nelson keeps moving and retains side control.
Calypse is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Calypse takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Calypse can't do much from the bottom here.

Nelson tries for a kimura but Calypse is defending well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Nelson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Nelson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Calypse struggling a bit here.

Nelson is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Calypse has escaped the position, nice work there.
Calypse tries to bench press Nelson off him but Nelson keeps the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Nelson goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Calypse rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Nelson's guard! Nice work there by Calypse!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brad Nelson dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Nelson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Calypse makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Alez Calypse seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Calypse misses with the combination.
Calypse tries to clinch up.
Calypse tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Nelson was well out of range. Poor timing from Calypse.
Nelson fails with a takedown attempt.
Nelson shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Calypse sprawls well. Calypse wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Nelson gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brad Nelson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nelson changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Calypse tries to avoid it but Nelson manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Calypse to the ground. Calypse escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Calypse punishes Nelson's body with a nice straight punch.
Nelson takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Calypse tries to clinch up but Nelson circles away and keeps his distance.

and Calypse counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Nelson is not content to let Calypse control the position.
Calypse lands with a punch from half guard.
Nelson controlling the position for now.

Calypse is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Nelson is trying to get back to full guard.
Nelson is looking to control Calypse's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Nelson avoid being mounted?

Nelson is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Calypse is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Calypse is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Nelson doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Calypse.

Nelson is trying to maintain the position but Calypse is very close to passing his half guard.

Calypse is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Nelson is looking for a sweep. Calypse is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Calypse wants to take a breather but Nelson is having none of it.
Calypse is looking to stall here but Nelson recovers full guard.
Calypse pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Nelson is keeping the position for now.
Nelson is pulling down on Calypse's head to control his posture.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Alez Calypse showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Brad Nelson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Nelson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Calypse is just riding it out for now. Nelson eventually gives up the hold.

Nelson is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Calypse will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Calypse tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Nelson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Calypse manages to get back to half guard.
Nelson looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Nelson prevents Calypse from improving his position.
Calypse is staying active underneath Nelson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Nelson drops an elbow to the side of Calypse's head.
Calypse is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Calypse avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Nelson.
Calypse has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Nelson is working away from the top position though.
Calypse takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Nelson is pressing down on Calypse's thigh, looking to free his foot. Calypse is holding on for now.

Nelson is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Calypse is refusing to be controlled, as Nelson sits in half guard.
Calypse wants to control but Nelson is keeping busy.
Calypse tries to get to full guard but Nelson has control of the leg.

Nelson is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Calypse has managed to free his arm - good work.

Nelson is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Nelson looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
